Girls hoops: Bloomer cuts down Cumberland

BLOOMER — The Bloomer girls basketball team picked up a 65-48 conference win over Cumberland on Tuesday thanks to three sources.

Allie Schwartz had 13 while K’trina Ruff and Hannah Rothbauer each had 11. Sarah Moan led the Beavers (1-6, 0-5 Heart O’North) with 15 points.

The Blackhawk (2-7, 2-3 HON) scorers got the team off to a hot 20-11 start and finished with a 20-8 fourth quarter.

Lake Holcombe 63, Cornell 51

In Cornell, the Chieftains’ pressure-packing defense didn’t wreak too much havoc until the second half, but it definitely worked.

“Their half-court trap is tough,” Cornell coach Jason Onsager said. “They do hassle teams really well.”

The Chiefs (1-4, 1-3 East Lakeland) did take care of the ball well at times in the first half and were only down five at halftime. Part of the reason for that was that Onsager’s team had plenty of time to prepare for the Chieftains (8-1, 4-0 ELC). That time also hurt  Cornell, as the Chiefs hadn’t played since Dec. 18.

“We looked sluggish,” Onsager said. “We didn’t have our basketball feet underneath us at times.”

Onsager added that his team had no answer for freshman phenom Tiffany Marshall, who led all scorers with 21 points. Cornell’s Amanda Smith had 16 to lead her team.

Altoona 87, Cadott 21

In Cadott, the Hornets had trouble on both sides of the ball.

The Railroaders (5-3, 5-2 West Cloverbelt) kept Cadott (1-9, 0-8 WCC) scoreless in the first quarter and held the Hornets to one point in the third.

“We started off really slow,” Cadott coach Bobbi Marion said. “They were pressing us right away. It flustered us a lot and gave them a lot of turnovers.”

Meanwhile, five girls racked up double-digit points for Altoona. Brooke Richardson had the most with 14. Cadott’s leader was Kendal Krouse with eight points.

" Dear Bloomer: Its a 60 word round-up of the game highlights. Unfortunately hustling and good box outs generally are not considered "highlights." I think your comment is whats inaccurate, it should read, "My daughter didn't make the paper and I don't have anything to clip out."
This is obviously a small paper, and boy people sure like to complain about it. Read the New York Times or even the Milwaukee Journal if you have problems with it. "

" FYI: The Bloomer girls basketball team did not win last night because of "three sources" but because there was a team effort with at least 9 or 10 girls each contributing, not only with points but also rebounds and steals, during the game. It was an enjoyable game to watch. Your comment on the game was inaccurate. "
