Chi-Hi honors social studies students for December

For the Herald

The Chippewa Falls Senior High School Social Studies Department is pleased to announce its social studies students of the month for December.

Junior Alicia Moen, the daughter of Dale and Mona Moen, was selected by her economics teacher Jason Bobb.

When asked about her favorite topic so far in her social studies courses, Alicia said, “My favorite topic would have to be the Vietnam War because dogs played such a big part! For U.S. history we had to do a research paper, and I had chosen that topic. I loved every minute writing that paper.”

“During my 10-year teaching career I can honestly say I have never had a student who takes so much pride in their work or demonstrates such desire for perfection,” Bobb said. “As a result of this internal motivation and her steadfast work ethic Alicia is currently earning a 105 percent.

“Alicia also demonstrates the ability to take the material we are covering in class and make real world connections in regards to our current economic conditions within the United States. Alicia is a student who will become a life-long learner and be successful in anything she puts her mind to.”

After graduating from Chi-Hi, Alicia intends on furthering her education at UW-Eau Claire.

Junior Calvin Quayle, the son of Steve Quayle, was selected by his U.S. history teacher Mark Isaacson.

Calvin said his favorite person in history was Calvin Coolidge, because they share a belief in laissez faire economics.

“I selected Calvin based on his superior performance in U.S. history,” Isaacson said. “As of this writing he has the highest grade of any of my students, 887/902, with numerous full-credit assignments and several perfect test scores. I was interested to see his favorite person in history (so far); I wonder if it’s entirely a matter of laissez faire or if President Coolidge’s first name, also, has anything to do with Calvin’s choice?!”

After graduating from Chi-Hi, Calvin plans on earning a degree at Virginia Tech.

Freshman Clara Steinmetz was selected by her world history teacher Ned Hanson. Clara’s guardians are Al and Shar Balsiger.

When asked about her favorite person and topic in history, Clara said that Abraham Lincoln and his accomplishments were very interesting and that she also had a particular interest in early American history including the Revolution and the Civil War.

“Clara is an outstanding student and her assignments and test scores are always at the top of the class,” Hanson said. “She is a pleasure to have in class because of her bright and cheerful personality and outstanding sense of humor.

“She is always pleasant and willing to participate in class discussions. Clara is also a member of the women’s basketball program and is a very successful deer hunter, willing to share her stories with all of us. Clara is a focused, dedicated student and a very nice young lady. I am certain whatever interests Clara pursues, she will be extremely successful.”

After graduating from Chi-Hi, Clara wants to focus on a medical degree in the future and hopes to become a pediatric oncologist, helping young victims of cancer.

Senior Kaitlyn Jensen, the daughter of Deb Zwiefelhofer and Randy Jensen, was selected by her political science teacher Tom Frederick.

When asked about her favorite topic in class, Kaitlyn said that she really enjoys discussing political issues.

“I feel very strongly about my opinions on all the political issues,” she said. “When we discuss those issues, it gives me a chance to voice what I believe. I also enjoy politics because I want to have a say in who leads our country.”

“Kaitlyn has had an outstanding semester in political science!” Frederick said. “She has done a superb job in all aspects of the class. She has earned A’s on all of her assignments and tests and she is a major contributor to our class discussions and debates.

“Kaitlyn is one of those really special kids who does a great job in the classroom and still is involved in many extra-curricular activities, including cheerleading, Harmonics and gymnastics. Her days are very busy outside of the classroom. However, the work ethic that she puts into her class work is incredible. There is no question that she will be ready to take on the challenges of college.”

After graduating from Chi-Hi, Kaitlyn plans on attending UW-Madison and majoring in spanish and biology. After that, she wants to go to medical school to become a doctor. She would like to travel the world helping third world Spanish-speaking countries provide medical care to their people.

Senior Sarah Schliesman, the daughter of Mike and Jean Schliesmann, was selected by her sociology teacher John Kinville.

Sarah said her favorite topic in class is current events because she enjoys sharing her opinions on various issues. She also think its good for a citizen to be in the know.

“Sarah is a terrific student,” Kinville said. “She comes to class each day with an enthusiasm and eagerness that is unmatched by many of her peers. Not only does she excel at the day-to-day work in the classroom, but prides herself on asking questions and participating in group discussion. Sarah is genuinely interested in critiquing the society around her, as she strives to help make her nation the best it can be. It has been a pleasure having this fine young lady in sociology.”

After graduating from Chi-Hi, Sarah plans on attending UW-Stevens Point to pursue a degree in resource management in youth programming and camp management.
