Markquart merging dealerships; combined firm to be in Lake Hallie

Some layoffs will be made after Markquart General Motors dealerships in Chippewa Falls and Lake Hallie are merged as of Monday, Feb. 2.

“These reductions have been minimal and are necessary to reduce some duplicate positions as we combine our staffs,” a company press release said.

Markquart announced Monday the consolidation of its Buick, Pontiac, GMC and Cadillac dealership at 321 W. Prairie View Road in Chippewa Falls into Markquart Chevrolet in Lake Hallie.

The combined company, co-owned by Dave and John Markquart, will be called Markquart Motors. It will do business out of the Lake Hallie location on U.S. 53, and will sell Chevrolets, Buicks, Pontiacs, GMCs and Cadillacs.

The dealership will have a General Motors Goodwrench Parts and Service center, and an auto body center.

The company said it is the largest GM dealership in northwest Wisconsin, and over the last 17 years Markquart dealerships have been the top seller of new and used vehicles in northwest Wisconsin.

Customers will be able to work with many of the same sales and service personnel as they have before, the company said.

The company did not say what will happen to its building at 321 W. Prairie View Road in Chippewa Falls.

" Reader- I think your premise is incorrect, if you're speaking of the exploration of combining the P.D.'s, it's not the same. It's not a pure lateral combination of services. An example would be if the Ford Company merged w/ Chysler. ?'s of contracts, senority, wages, & etc.. Don't get me wrong shrinking overhead and saving money in these economic times are wise; however, ONLY where feasible. To chip- correction the dealerships are more than a mile apart. "

" You really can't blame them for trying to cut costs in this economic environment, but it's a shame to lose so many jobs and another business from Chippewa Falls. "

" While I do agree that any business closing can be trying for the employees and the local economy...I do feel compelled to say that this can lead to other great opportunities for the consumer. Over the years I have found that nothing can compare with the small town dealers. Service, sales, price and the ability to actually speak with the true business owner is tops in my book. "

" WOW! more movement in lake Hallie. Good luck to the understaffed Officers! "

" It is sad regarding the folks that will be losing jobs however, it really does not make sense to have two dealerships within a mile of each other in today's economy.
I think the next step is to look at prices for the service of vehicles. Marquart is extremely high. Go into the waiting lounge at the Hallie location just once. It is amazing! Pristine furniture, big screen TV, free vittles and drink, internet access, etc. Marquart customers are paying for this and I am no longer willing to do this. I will have my service performed elsewhere unless they reduce prices. "

" I don't think this has anything to do with the way John treats local people. I believe this is a sign of the things to come as the economy struggles and everyone is looking at ways to make ends meet.
The Ford dealership in Lake Hallie went away. What other business is or will be looking at this same thing. This fits in with government also looking at combing services and being more cost efficent. "

" I've been employed at the Chippewa store for 10 years, and I will be going to the Hallie location. The Markquart's care more for us than any employer I've worked for. It's sad to say goodbye to my friends that will be leaving, but we are all excited for the opportunities that one mega-store will bring. "

" I'm really sorry for the people who will lose their jobs and for the city that will lose yet another business.
Maybe now John Markquart will learn to treat local people like they actually exist. "
