Mueller, Bishop, Bowe honored for English work

For the Herald

The Chippewa Falls Senior High School English Department is pleased to announce its English Students of the Month for November.

Freshman Karissa Mueller, the daughter of Randy and Patricia Mueller, was nominated by her English teacher Lisa Crocker.

“Karissa has been my student this semester in English 9,” Crocker said. “Her enthusiasm for literature and lively interest in what we are studying sets her apart. Karissa loves to read and writes thoughtful responses based on her reading. I look forward to talking with her about the books she has read. In class Karissa is always prepared with good questions and insightful comments to add to a discussion.

“Finally, I appreciate the consistent high quality of Karissa’s work. She does her best work on every assignment whether it is a simple summary or a 2-3 page short story. Karissa is a pleasure to have in class, and deserves to be English student of the month.”

Karissa’s interests include photography, watching movies, reading, and playing with her dog.

She enjoys volunteering to pick up trash around town on spring clean-up day, and walking dogs at the animal shelter. She is currently involved with a fundraiser to buy fleece to make blankets for babies at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Karissa’s goal is to become a professional photographer. She plans to attend Duke University or a college more focused on the arts.

Junior Miranda Bishop, the daughter of David and Christine Bishop, was nominated by her English teacher Warren Bowe.

“I’ve nominated Miranda Bishop for several reasons,” Bowe said. “In addition to being an outstanding student, Miranda contributes to class discussions in a serious, thought-filled manner. She is able to make meaningful connections between books like’ A Tale of Two Cities’ and the world today and has an excellent understanding of what makes great literature universal.

“Miranda’s writing shows attention to detail both in content and in conventions, and her maturity is well beyond that of your average high school junior. I truly appreciate having students like Miranda in class.”

Miranda enjoys volunteering with Sunday school and the AWANA programs at Chippewa Valley Bible Church. She takes pleasure in offering assistance at the Trinity Equestrian Center.

Her interests include singing, playing piano, reading, riding horse, Mirage and musical theater.

Miranda plans on attending a four-year college to attain a music major with an English minor.

Senior Ben A. Bowe, the son of Allen M. and Julie M. Bowe, was nominated by his English teacher Molly Nowlan.

“I am happy to select Ben A. Bowe as my English student of the month,” Nowlan said. “Ben is a leader in my world literature class in every sense of the word; he makes astute and sophisticated observations about the reading, he’s an active participant and also encourages the participation of his classmates. His questions and respectful challenges to his classmates’ ideas are an excellent model of critical thinking, and Ben frequently brings our class discussion to a higher level. His written work is always thoughtful and thorough.

“Ben is a pleasure to have in class, with a ready smile and interesting experiences and perspectives to bring to the discussion. His creativity, attention to detail and kind demeanor will take him far; I look forward to seeing where Ben will go in the future!”

Ben’s school activities include Harmonics, Science Olympiad, and American Club. He enjoys reading philosophy books, relaxing to music, and taking pictures.

Volunteering at Agnes Table has been an enjoyable experience for him and so has the time given to the Democratic office this election.

Ben plans to attend the University of St. Paul in Minnesota and major in biomedical engineering with a possible minor in philosophy. He also hopes to spend a year of college in England.
