Newell, Carlton, Kiszer earn English honors

For the Herald

The Chippewa Falls Senior High School English Department is pleased to announce its English students of the month for October.

Senior Daniel Newell, the son of Marie Newell, was chosen by his English teacher Greg Adams.

“Daniel is a deep thinker and a skilled writer,” Adams said. “I’ve been impressed with his work ethic in my writers’ workshop class. Daniel recently wrote an essay on becoming lost in books, which was incredibly insightful, something I’d expect from a college-age writer. I appreciate his love of books and his diligent work in my class.

“I also appreciate Daniel’s dedication to writing. In addition to the pieces he’s produced for class assignments, Daniel has generated extra writing in his spare time.

“Daniel’s self-discipline and passion for words will take him far.”

Daniel’s interests include playing video games, walking, reading and writing, and watching movies. He is a member of YONPIF (Youth of the Nation Pay it Forward).

Daniel would like to pursue a truck driving career through Chippewa Valley Technical College.

Junior Kendra Kiszer, the daughter of Machelle and Peter Walters, and Todd Kiszer, was chosen by her English teacher Sharon Daniels.

“Curious, keen-witted and conscientious aptly describe Kendra Kiszer, a student in my fourth hour intermediate composition class,” Daniels said. “Kendra listens attentively in class and applies the tricks of the trade to her writing with deftness and precision. Not only does she take her revisions seriously, but she offers helpful suggestions to her classmates during peer conferences.

“With an eye for detail, her writing sizzles with substance and creates a clear picture in the reader’s mind. It is a pleasure to nominate Kendra for this award of English Student of the Month.”

Kendra is a member of the Chi-Hi Marching Band. She enjoys arts and crafts, walking, running, reading and writing.

Kendra plans on attending Massachusetts’s Institute of Technology and becoming an architect.

Sophomore Cody Carlton, the son of Cindy Aston, was chosen by his English teacher Pam Bowe.

“This is the first time I have had Cody as a student, and he has shown a true enthusiasm for English 10A,” Bowe said. “Cody is a friendly, eager student whose innate love for learning is contagious. He gives me feedback on topics in class and on his work, updating me on his progress.

“Also, he is willing to take risks in his writing, which shows that he wants to improve and gain from his writing, rather than just worry about grades. Plus, Cody is kind to those around him. I feel fortunate having Cody in my class.”

Cody’s school activities include the Chi-Hi band and marching band. He has a passion for playing trombone in the outdoor concerts.

Cody plans to attend college and major in music.
