Lake Hallie considers Nehring as interim chief

Chippewa Falls Chief of Police Wayne Nehring may be taking on double duty for a few months beginning in January.

He would serve as the Village of Lake Hallie’s interim police chief from January until a new chief is hired if the village and the city of Chippewa Falls approve an agreement.

The Village Board approved a preliminary agreement with the city of Chippewa Falls for the services Monday night.

The interim chief will be needed as current Chief Gale Haas announced his retirement mid-November. He is set to leave the first week of January, and the Village’s Police Commission does not intend to have a new chief start until sometime near March 1.

" WATCHDOG: It's my understanding Cheif Nehring will be in Lake Hallie a very limited amount of time. The Sgt. will hopefully run most of the day to day operations,as he has done for the past twenty years or so. As for wages, it's a secret I guess. Mr Lehman made the request, I'll let you guess as to HIS motives. And as all Cheifs he will perform an administration function. My question, If his role is going to be so limited, then why not save the money and have the next in line at the P.D. be interim Cheif?!? I thought Mr. Lehman was the 'champion' of the tax payers. Unless his MOTIVES are less than honorable(HMMM). "

" The citizens of CF are fortunate to have the service of Chief Nehring. Chief Nehring demonstrates honesty, integrity, and genuine concern for the citizens of CF. He works long hours for our community. Who made the request for his service and who promoted this idea? What are the details of the contract? What specific services will he provide? "

" "reality strikes"

It is always amusing to me when people who have no clue about the facts of an issue start spouting off about how they have all the answers and know what the solution is. You don't have a clue, so why do you spout off at the mouth? Eau Claire and Eau Claire County looked at merging, so did Barron County and Rice Lake. Many other areas have looked into merging. All of them are still separate aren't they? They always come up with same conclusion, it costs much more to combine the departments than to stay separate. If you want to see your taxes go way up, then by all means, support a merger. Lake Hallie PD costs so much less to run than CFPD. If CFPD were to cover Lake Hallie the cost would skyrocket. They have better equipment, more equipment and MUCH HIGHER WAGES! Chippewa also has about 2 cops per 1000/population, Lake Hallie, about 3/4 of a cop per 1000. Bit of a difference. Try to know a little bit about something before ranting about it. "

" Hopefully, this will be the beginning of effective use of taxpayer funded resources. This doesn't have anything to do with how much time Chief Nehring has on his hands. It makes no sense to have two separate police depts in communities right next to each other.

In fact, in the Chippewa and Eau Claire County metro, it doesn't make any sense to have six or seven separate law enforcement agencies. Combine them all. The only people who are in favor of the status quo are law enforcement apologists that think these depts are all about providing as many taxpayer funded jobs as possible. "

" I know for a fact that Chief Nehring does not have extra time on his hands. He commonly works a 10-12 hour day. I am just concerned with him working with another department will end up costing the department more money in overtime. "

" It appears as thought Chief Nehring has some extra time on his hands. Maybe he should reduce his number of hours to those actually needed, and take a pay cut!!!

Is this the start to consolidating departments? "

michael wrote on Dec 2, 2008 2:37 PM:

" Does that suggest that Chief Nehring will be taking time away from the Chippewa PD? If so will one of his Lieutenants has to step in and stop patrolling or investigating crime with in our city? I dont see the advantage to this. Will the City be paying overtime to an additional officer to cover for the Chief? This story could have had a little more information. "
