Bus company awaiting medical test of driver involved in crash

The Chippewa Yellow Bus Co. is awaiting to see if Mary M. Martin is medically cleared to continue driving school bus, a company official said Tuesday morning.

Martin remains an employee of the company while it waits for the results, said Kurt Nelson, safety director for the bus company. Martin has been a driver for Chippewa Yellow Bus Co., the company that supplies bus service of the Chippewa Falls School District, for more than 20 years.

Martin has not resumed driving for the company since the school bus she was driving overturned Nov. 10 in the town of Wheaton. Six children were aboard the bus and two had minor injuries.

Martin was cited by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department for driving too fast for conditions.

A sheriff’s department report implied that a medical problem or Martin’s medication may have been a factor in the crash.

County dispatchers received a 911 telephone call just prior to the crash on County F, 75 feet north of 50th Avenue, with information about a school bus that was being driven erratically.

Martin takes prescription medicine to help her sleep and for allergies, according to information in the accident report.

A witness reported prior to the crash that Martin was driving erratically.

Examples cited were driving in the northbound lane while traveling southbound, failing to pick up a student, and not stopping for a railroad crossing.

The bus entered a ditch and overturned onto its top.

Crash factors cited in the report included the vehicle going left of center, the driver failing to have control, and the driver’s condition.

Martin, 59, told a deputy she did not remember the events before the crash.

" I agree that we all should wait for the facts to come in before we all jump to conclusions. For me since she is not driving now and therefore cannot have another accident the important thing is if she is ill that she get the help needed to get better and to thank God noone was seriously hurt. Little compasion during these tough times from all of us would be a good thing. Happy Holiday's Everyone "

" Guilty until proven innocent, huh? Why cant all of you stop making ASSumptions until all the facts are out. How do you know she took anyhign the day before? It said that she takes then for help. Maybe she has not taken anything recently. Stop judging until you yourself are in these people's shoes. I would sure hope a few of you end up on the other side of things.

Must be nice to be so perfect. Please let me know how you became so perfect. "

" How is this driving under the influence any different than the accident that happened outside of Luther Hospital last year. Where the lady was taking prescription medications and ran somebody on the sidewalk over?? Charges should be the same. "

" watching:

I was not making accusations. I was just asking a question due to the article stating that they THINK it was due to a medical condition OR MEDICATION. That is where my question stemmed from. It's not always easy to hear a person's tone through their words and you have misunderstood what I was trying to get across. I was not being negative. I was merely stating that I thought there were guidelines that drivers had to meet in order to hold a CDL. period. "

" Why do you guys need to show such negativity against the driver of the bus. Do you really know what happened and what caused the accident. Mary is a good and wonderful person and had a medical condition which caused her have this accident. Please stop showing such negativity and show some compassion. She is going through hell right now dealing with her medical issue and what happened and thanking God that no one was killed. Please think about what you are saying and the accusations that you are throwing at her. Maybe someday you will suffer from a medical condition that will cause you to be involved in an accident. Will that be okay with you them. Think before you speak (or write). "

" Why hasn't she been charged with a DUI yet? She needs to be held accountable. If this would have been a person out of control due to alcohol, you know they would have been charged right away. This is no different. If you have certain medical reasons, you shouldn't be driving if you are unsafe. "

goofyone wrote on Nov 30, 2008 4:01 PM:

" If you hold a CDL to drive school buses, aren't there restrictions as to taking any medications that would limit your driving abilities? I was under the impression that you couldn't use a sleep aid if you drove with a CDL. If that is the case, then she shouldn't be allowed back driving unless she stops using the medication. "

" I used to drive for this company. I drove charter and also had a school route. This was back in the mid 1980's,
I never felt I had enough time to run my route and get the kids to school on time without having to drive about 10 to 15 over the speed limit. Not that this has anything to do with this, I am just making a comment. The routes are too big to allow drivers to run them safely. I even tried calling parents to have their kids come out 10 minutes early so I could start earlier. This went over like a lead balloon. Parents were not cooperative with this at all. You'd think I was asking for their first born or something. "
