Chippewa Falls resident Jo Schaefer was recognized as a “Friend of Home Care” at a reception held in her honor at the central office of Northwest Wisconsin HomeCare (NWHC). Schaefer, a former nurse and long time hospice volunteer with NWHC, was instrumental in establishing the tradition of Hospice Remembrance Quilts.
Each year, since 1993, Schaefer created a unique design, stitching the names of the patients served that year by the hospice program of NWHC.
“It was my way of honoring those who chose hospice as a means of traveling through their final stage of life,” said Schaefer. As the quilts grew in size, due to the increased number of patients served, Schaefer had to enlist the help of other skilled and talented quilters to complete the project.
“Her compassion for our patients and families, along with her artistic vision, blended together to create very unique works of art made of cloth,” said Pat Pope, Administrator of NWHC. “We have been so honored to be able to share the quilts with family members and the public throughout the years, we thought it was appropriate to recognize Jo during National Home care and Hospice month.”
In addition to the “Friend of Home Care” plaque that was presented by Pope on behalf of the agency, she was also presented with a plaque of commendation from Gov. Jim Doyle.
Northwest Wisconsin HomeCare, a non-profit home health and hospice agency serves all or parts of 12 counties in western Wisconsin. In addition to the Central Office, NWHC has branch offices in Barron, Bloomer, Menomonie and Mondovi.
