MADISON – After an unprecedented run of nearly four decades, state Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, is being tossed off the influential commission that oversees state buildings — and he’s not happy about it.
Risser, 81, is the nation’s longest serving state lawmaker and has served on the state Building Commission since 1969 — a key post for his Madison constituents because it oversees projects ranging from construction on the UW-Madison campus to renovations in and around the Capitol.
Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker, D-Weston, announced late Monday that Risser would leave the commission in January 2010 and be replaced by Sen. Pat Kreitlow, D-Chippewa Falls.
In a statement released by an aide, Risser said the change had not been voluntary.
“It was not my choice and I would have preferred to stay on for another two years,” he said.
Aides to Risser declined to answer other questions.
Decker spokeswoman Carrie Lynch said that an initial statement she made Monday that Risser had graciously stepped aside had not been meant to imply that he had offered to do so.
“He’s been on it for 40 years and it was time to let somebody else get experience on this commission,” Lynch said.
Risser and Decker were at odds last session over Risser’s unsuccessful push to enact a statewide smoking ban that includes bars and restaurants. Risser has said he intends to seek the ban again in the next session.
