Good foods and drinks are something to share with friends and family, to keep traditions alive, to discover new experiences, and to celebrate life. Whether you eat to live, or live to eat, you’ll find an incredible array of wonderful foods and beverages to sample at the third annual Taste of the North on Saturday at the Heyde Center for the Arts.
The Taste of the North is a fundraiser for the Heyde Center for the Arts, but the other goal of the event is much bigger. The most important goal is to recognize and be thankful for the important businesses and craftspersons that underpin our local economy: The supermarkets where we buy our foods, the farmers and producers that supply fresh foods, the restaurants where we treat ourselves to, and the emerging wineries and micro-breweries that are bringing new sources of income to the area.
By shopping at or using the services of these local businesses, they in turn pour that money back into the community by employing local people and buying local goods. Moreover, these businesses are significant contributors to the community in many other ways by contributing their time and their profits to community projects such as the Heyde Center.
The stage is set for a fantastic night in the Center’s beautiful auditorium. Sixteen businesses will be represented, including: Gordy’s County Markets, The Creamery, The Bullfrog Fish Farm, Just Local Food Co-op, Hahn’s Market, Connell’s, Viking Brewery, Castle Rock Organic Dairy, Premium Waters, Inc., Chateau St. Croix Winery and Vineyard, Lucy’s Delicatessen, Foster’s Catering, Foreign 5, and General Beer Northwest.
The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is by a $25 donation to the Heyde Center. For more information visit www.cvca.net or call (715) 726-9000.

Amazing Jeffo the magician
Northwestern Bank presents the Amazing Jeffo at a 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. show on Sunday, Nov. 9.
Jeff Smith is an extraordinary magician who captures the imagination of all ages with an engaging blend of magic, music and comedy. Smith has been performing 150 shows a year for 15 years at schools, clubs, on TV and elsewhere.
Selected playing cards rise from a giant deck, a sword is visibly passed through the neck of a volunteer, Jeffo’s head shrinks and enlarges. This is a magic show with a surprising twist.
“A man who lives up to his title — amazing!” R.J. Fritz — WCCO Television.
Admission is $5 for adults $5, and youth under 18 are $1 without coupon or free with a coupon. For more information, visit www.amazingjeffo.com
