Diederichs, Seibel tops in 4-H speaking contest

For the Herald

Thirty-two youth participated in the Chippewa County Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking Contest, sharing their thoughts and ideas about today’s environment. Two county youth were selected to represent Chippewa County at the area contest in Eau Claire on Oct. 23.

Shannon Diederichs was selected to represent the Elementary Division, youth in grades 5-6, with her speech, “Bike Trail Blues.” She is a student at Jim Falls Elementary School.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Justin Wachtendonk, Woodmohr 4-H Club, for his speech “The Safety of a Little Drop” and Sam Smith, Southview Elementary School, for his speech “Helping the River.”

In the Junior Division, youth grades 7-8, Trent Seibel was selected for area competition with his speech, “Don’t Be a Water Waster.” Trent is a student at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Bloomer.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Caroline Vodacek, St. Paul’s Catholic School for her speech “Wildflower or Hazard?” and Tyler Baier, St. Peter’s Catholic School, for his speech “The Color Green.”

By winning first place in the Chippewa County Speaking Contest, Diederichs and Seibel will take part in the West Central Area Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking Contest.

The county contest was held at the Chippewa Falls Middle School. The Chippewa Falls Lions Club, the Chippewa County Land Conservation Committee, and Chippewa County UW-Extension Office co-sponsored the contest. The county contest is part of the Wisconsin Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking Contest.

Judges for this year’s speaking contest were Seth Ebel, Lee Gourley, Jane Jensen, Randy Knapp, Michele Koch, Gordie Meinen, Chuck Norseng and Dan Strange.

Coordinators for the contest were Dan Masterpole, Chippewa County Conservationist, and Jackie Johnson, Chippewa County 4-H Youth Development Agent.
