For the Herald
Ruth Newton was born Nov. 2, 1908. She prepares to celebrate her 100th birthday from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at her residence, Comforts of Home Assisted Living in Chippewa Falls.
Ruth was born and raised in Wild Rose, Wis., and attended County Normal for teachers after high school and taught close to her home for six years.
From 1954 to 1974, she taught in the Chippewa County and Chippewa public school systems while attending the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire. There, she earned both her bachelor’s degrees and continued with classes toward her master’s until she had to take mandantory retirement at age 65.
Some of the schools she taught at were Brown School, Stillson, Chestnut and Hillcrest (when it opened as half-time principle, half time sixth-grade) where she taught until the end of the school year in 1974.
After retirement, she did a great deal of travel and, as always, was very active in her church — Chippewa Valley Bible Church, where she still gets to a Sunday service once in a while.
Ruth is the mother of three, grandmother to 12 and great-grandmother to 25. When asked about her life, she says, it has “been an adventure.”
