BOYCEVILLE — Onlookers lined up for yards and yards as Terry Englert sprinted by.
He needed to push hard with a runner from Webster and Grantsburg a second behind him.
But the Cadott senior crossed the finish line at the WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional in fifth place and qualified for the state meet at Wisconsin Rapids next Saturday.
Englert finished with a time of 17 minutes, 23.5 seconds. Webster’s Jack Taylor won the race and led his team to the sectional team title as well. Taylor had a time of 16 minutes, 48.9 seconds.
Cadott’s boys team finished third to Webster and Eau Claire Regis. Josiah Yeager finished 19th and Mike Sonnentag was 23rd as the Hornets had the trio in the top 25.
Stanley-Boyd finished sixth as a team and McDonell was ninth in the 13-team field.
The Orioles’ boys team was led by Anthony Kirckof and Kevin Nelson as each were in the top 25 of the 100 runners. Kirckof was 17th and Nelson was 25th.
McDonell was led by Evin See, who finished 31st. Top runner Matt Wenaas had to drop out with a leg injury.
Owen-Withee’s girls team won the sectional with Colfax taking second in the 11-team field. McDonell was sixth, Cadott was 10th and Stanley-Boyd did not have a complete team.
McDonell had two runners finish within the top 25 of the 85 total runners. Amy Bye led the Macks with a 15th place finish and Katie Stoik was 25th.
“It just wasn’t Amy’s day,” coach Marty Bushland said. “It was nice to see Katie end it with a season best, though.”
Although the Orioles didn’t have a complete team, Marissa Mahr led the four-runner contingent with a 16th place finish.
Cadott’s top runner was Jessica Kelly, who took 31st.
Chi-Hi runners end season
At La Crosse, the Cardinals were unable to see any of their runners reach the state cross country meet next week after competing at a WIAA Division 1 sectional.
The closest Chi-Hi got was junior Jamie Bengston. She finished 13th overall, but was 0.9 seconds away from qualifying. Bengston had a time of 15 minutes, 51.9 seconds, just behind Holmen’s Jesse Heiden.
The Cardinals finished eighth out of 12 schools. Onalaska won and La Crosse Central was second. The Hilltoppers’ Jami Hill won the girls race with a time of 14 minutes, 59.5 seconds.
La Crosse Logan won the boys race and Eau Claire Memorial was second. Chi-Hi was 10th of 12 schools.
Logan’s Bobby Glotfelty won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 9.3 seconds.
Chi-Hi was led by Justin Wittwer’s 31st place finish and a time of 17 minutes, 55.2 seconds.
