The driver of a motorcycle reported stolen in Douglas County eluded Chippewa Falls police, but he wasn’t out of trouble.
According to police, the driver ran through the parking lot of the AmericInn at 11 W. South Ave., lost control of the 2008 Honda and put it into a ditch at 5:02 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the man then crossed Highway 124 on foot, crossed it a second time, and then caught a ride to Eau Claire.
That’s where Joseph E. Zimmerman, 19, 31898 Highway 13, Mellen, was taken into custody by University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire police.
Zimmerman was treated in the emergency room of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls and then taken to the Chippewa County Jail.
Chippewa Falls police said he was arrested for knowingly fleeing police, operating a motor vehicle without consent and p ossessing-concealing stolen property.
According to police:
An officer running radar on Main Street saw two motorcycles traveling southbound.
One of the motorcycles was going over the speed limit, and the officer tried to pull over that motorcycle, which refused to stop. (The driver of the second motorcycle did pull over and was going the speed limit.)
The motorcycle reached speeds of 60 to 65 mph while continuing southbound on Main Street, and did not stop for a stop sign on Wisconsin Street.
The officer lost sight of the motorcycle at South Avenue and ended the chase.
The AmericInn then reported the cycle was in a ditch, and had extensive front-end damage.
Several people either called police or stopped officers to report on the changing location of the driver.
Both the Lake Hallie Police Department and the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department helped in the search for the driver.
A witnesses helped provide the identification of the likely driver and found he was at an Eau Claire residence.
From there, campus police arrested Zimmerman.
