Hornets, Macks run to glory

CADOTT — Cadott’s boys cross country team earned runner-up honors with McDonell taking third at the Cloverbelt Conference Meet Saturday.

Eau Claire Regis’ boys team won the league’s championship, placing its top five runners in the top 20 of the overall standings.

McDonell’s Grant Mickesh paced the local schools with a fourth-place finish and a time of 17 minutes, 25.5 seconds.

McDonell coach Marty Bushland said it’s part of an amazing year for Mickesh.

“For a first-year runner, fourth place is simply awesome,” he said.

Marshfield Columbus’ Bryan Carey set the pace with a time of 17 minutes, 7.2. seconds.

Matt Wenaas, Adam Bleskachek and Evin See joined Mickesh with top 25 finishes in the 81-runner field and all but See claimed all-conference honors. See missed by four seconds.

Josiah Yeager finished sixth and Terry Englert was eighth to lead the Hornets to the runner-up finish. Ben Elbert was 12th.

Although Michael Sonnentag and Nick Streeter didn’t finish in the top 25, they were close. Sonnentag was 26th and Streeter was 27th.

Stanley-Boyd finished sixth and Gilman/Cornell was ninth. The Orioles were led by Steven Stasek’s 21st place finish. The Pirates were led by Eric Phelps, who took 18th.

McDonell’s girls team was the best for the area, finishing seventh in the 13-team field. Cadott, Stanley-Boyd and Gilman/Cornell finished 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.

Osseo-Fairchild’s Halei Steig was the best runner in the field with a time of 15 minutes, 57.2. seconds.

McDonell’s Amy Bye was the best area finisher, taking eighth with a time of 16 minutes, 44.1 seconds.

Bye was joined in the top 25 of the 87-girl field by Megan Pulver, who finished 20th. Both were all-conference and Pulver was running with a stress fracture.

“Once she gets to 100 percent,” Bushland said, “she’ll be one of the best in the conference.”

Stanley-Boyd’s Marissa Mahr took 15th and Jessica Hoffstatter was 17th. Cadott was led by Jennifer Greene’s 14th place finish. Gilman/Cornell was led by Jenny Toutant, who finished in 29th place.

At Casper Park, the Mid-State Conference champions finished out their year with a shutout to go a perfect 10-0 in conference.

Coach Tim Jenneman said the season is just starting, though.

“I’m very pleased with today’s effort and we accomplished our first goal of winning the conference,” he said. “Now it’s regional and sectional playoff time.”

The game’s first score came off the foot of Cory Arneson while Will Schifeling provided the assist.

Jenneman said the defense controlled the game as the Macks (19-1-2, 10-0 MSC) protected their lead.

The insurance goal came at the 58-minute mark with Luke Roth scoring. Schifeling again had the assist.

Jenneman said the win capped off a memorable regular season.

“Winning back-to-back conference titles is cool, especially after losing five seniors,” he said.

The top-seeded team’s first playoff game is on Thursday against Gresham.

At Casper Park, Thursday’s game against Pacelli started slow, but the Macks kicked into gear to take the win.

After a scoreless first half, Jenneman said players were determined to change the score.

“At half, the players were putting a lot of pressure on themselves to score,” he said. “We talked about stepping it up and playing our game. They came out and played their game.”

Roth scored the first goal four minutes into the second half with Arneson assisting.

Schifeling tallied the second goal as the Macks blanked Pacelli.
