Cards hurting at Eau Claire Memorial

EAU CLAIRE —Chi-Hi soccer coach Ben Goeman knew that the game against Eau Claire Memorial would be tough, but not this tough.

Already down one player, Chi-Hi (9-11-2, 3-7-1 BRC) lost three more to injury during Tuesday’s 6-0 loss. They included Chris Facklam with a knee injury, Chris Schnobrich with a collision and Zach Lato with a head injury.

Though Schnobrich’s injury is not severe and Lato returned for a brief period, Goeman said it still put them behind the eight ball.

“Without our starters, it’s hard to compete,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll get some guys back. Our task is to put this behind us and focus on the next game.”

While Goeman said those filling the starters’ spots performed admirably, he added that Memorial’s experience was too much.

Three of the goals came in the first half and the other three in the second. Goalie Tayler Schoenberg had eight saves in a bad situation.

“There was a lot of pressure on him,” Goeman said. “It could’ve been worse if he didn’t have some nice saves.”

At fifth in the conference, Chi-Hi faces Menomonie on Thursday before Friday’s meeting for playoff seeding.

Volleyball

McDonell 3, Owen-Withee 0

In Owen, the Macks wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of Owen-Withee in the Cloverbelt Crossover match between third-place teams, 25-21, 25-17, 25-16.

“They were definitely deserving of their third place in their division,” McDonell coach Kat Roesler said of the Blackhawks. “They were a scrappy team.”

What helped the Macks prevail was Owen-Withee’s hitting. Roesler said the Blackhawks didn’t hit the ball hard or deep onto the court. Once McDonell (24-11) made adjustments, the Macks began to roll.

“It was all off-speed stuff. It was like Regis where they hit hard,” she said. “Owen-Withee doesn’t make a lot of mistakes hitting, so we had to adjust to how they hit.”

That adjustment came from the back row. Mollie Meagher had 23 digs followed by Sam Schemenauer with 13 digs.

Christi Schoch and Chrysta Brinkman had seven kills each and Breanna Jenneman had four block kills. Karley Weinsch added 27 assists and two aces.

Cornell 3, Prairie Farm 0

In Cornell, the Chiefs (6-11, 3-7 ELC) wrapped up their regular season with a 25-10, 25-16, 27-25 win over the Panthers (2-12, 0-10 ELC)

“It was a nice way to end the season,” coach Dale Yindra said. “It was nice to wrap up with a win.”

The Parents Night victory saw Amanda Smith tally nine digs and Cari Arneson make 31 assists. Yindra said Kelsey Jensen also had a big night serving that was crucial in the win.

Bruce 3, New Auburn 1

In New Auburn, the Trojans started off with a 25-22 win before games of 22-25, 24-26, 14-25.

Coach Debbie Davis said it was just a bad night overall for the team.

“Bruce just wanted it a little bit more,” she said. “We didn’t play to our potential.”

Cross Country

Kressin eighth at HON meet

At Cumberland Golf Club, Bloomer’s Chrisitan Kressin paced his team to a third place finish at the Heart O’North Cross Country Championships Tuesday.

Kressin finished eighth overall, 32 seconds behind conference champion Ethan Zimmerman of Hayward. The Hurriacnes also won the boys title. The Blackhawks’ boys team had two others in the top 25 as John Vodacek was 11th and Jesse Kressin was 22nd.

Bloomer’s girls team was last out of seven teams as Northwestern won the title. Chetek’s Shelby Berning won the league title. The Blackhawks were led by Sarah Raddenbach’s 28th place finish.
