The weapon a man used in robbing a bank in Holcombe on Friday afternoon had a red tip on it, according to information listed on a Chippewa Falls Police log.
A red tip could mean the gun was not a real weapon. Toy guns are required to have colored tips so police don’t mistake them for real guns.
Sheriff James Kowalczyk was not available for comment Saturday afternoon on whether the description on the police log was correct.
The robbery at the Dairyland State Bank, 26353 South Highway 27, Holcombe, was reported at 3:35 p.m. Friday.
The person reporting the incident said a male wearing a ski mask entered the bank, showed a handgun and demanded money. The man then left the bank in a red club-cab pick-up truck and travelled west on County M.
A Chippewa County patrol unit patrolling the Holcombe area reported to the sheriff’s department that it was pursuing a truck matching that description west on County M toward County CC. The truck was followed south on County CC towards Cornell, where a Cornell Police officer began pursuit. The Cornell officer then followed the truck westbound onto County Z to County E. The vehicle then eluded the officer.
Kowalczyk told the Herald on Friday the man did escape with some money, although the amount had not been determined.
A box left behind at the scene prompted the Marathon County Bomb Squad to be called in Friday night. But that was cleared up by 9:50 p.m., when Kowalcyzk left the scene.
It turned out it was the second bank alarm at a Dairyland State Bank in the county on Friday.
A sheriff’s department log said at 10:09 a.m. an active hold up alarm was sounding at the Dairyland State Bank located at 240 S. Broadway St. in Stanley. But the bank’s security company told the department to disregard the call.
