Sheriff's department searches for man who held up bank

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a man who allegedly robbed a Holcombe bank Friday afternoon.

The description of the vehicle and the suspect are still vague as a box left behind at the scene has prompted the Marathon County Bomb Squad to be called in Friday night.

“There was a box left behind, and we’re treating it as being a possible explosive,” Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said.

Someone from the Dairyland State Bank, 26353 South Highway 27, Holcombe, called the sheriff’s department at 3:35 p.m. Friday to report the bank had been held up.

The person reporting the incident said a male wearing a ski mask entered the bank, showed a handgun and demanded money. The man then left the bank in a red club-cab pick-up truck and travelled west on County M.

Kowalczyk said the man did escape with some money, although the amount has not been determined yet.

“There was some currency taken,” he said.

A Chippewa County patrol unit patrolling the Holcombe area reported to the sheriff’s department that it was pursuing a truck matching that description west on County M toward County CC. The truck was followed south on County CC towards Cornell, where a Cornell Police officer began pursuit. The Cornell officer then followed the truck westbound onto County Z to County E. The vehicle then eluded the officer.

The vehicle is described as a newer model, red, extended cab pick-up without a topper. The vehicle has a loud exhaust and no rear license plate.

The suspect is described as a husky male.

Kowalczyk said there are surveillance cameras inside and outside of the building, but the department will not be able to access those videos or any other evidence until the bomb squad has cleared the building.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department is requesting anyone with information on the robbery or pick-up truck to call the department at 726-7824.

" RAJ - we've taken some lashings! Small town cops are not used to this stuff so a little extra training would help. I'm sure it's not in the budget though. Chip makes no sense. "

" hmmmm and RAJ:
if your questioning law enforcement ability then do this. Go buy a red chevy pickup and then take the rear plate off and drive down CC just out of Cornell. I'll bet you don't make it one mile until cops are all over you like a fat boy on a cupcake. In fact, I have $10 that says within one mile. I'll bet rez, chip lady, and Donatello all would take a piece of this action too. "

" and if a cop is chasing a guy at maybe 100 miles an hour and the guy runs through a stop sign at that speed is the cop supposed to do the same thing? No. They gotta slow and make sure they don't hit nobody. Easy for somebody to get away that way. Dunno what happened but I can see lots of ways for a guy to get away even in broad daylight. Obviously some of you goofs dunno your top from bottom. "

" Exactly donatello......and for hhmm...since 'security' cameras have been in use for some time now, I would think that they could/would/might be of help. Most bank robbers use a face covering of some sort and they are caught, sometimes because of the other clothing they wear. YOU aren't in law enforcement and therefore shouldn't criticize what you don't know. "

" Hey RAJ~that just shows how good YOU are at seeing details. The article is RIGHT THERE for you to read, and it specifically states that the truck had NO license plates...yet you ask "was a plate number at least obtained?" You don't know what you're talking about, and have NO right to criticize, because you can't even read details that are right in front of your own face. Maybe if you knew the whole of the story, you wouldn't be so quick to judge and criticize what you obviously don't know anything about. "

" I was wondering the same thing, how did this guy get away. And in the mean time, more time is passing as they can't view the "security" tapes until the site is clear. What good are these tapes?? This guy picked the right bank and made it look pretty easy. "

" How does a truck elude a squad car in broad daylight on a perfectly dry day? Time for some training, perhaps? Was a plate number at least obtained? "
