Chippewa Falls council snuffs out smoking ban

Months of discussion on a workplace ban on smoking ended Tuesday when the Chippewa Falls City Council voted 5-2 to wait for the state to act.

Voting in favor were council members Brian Flynn, Jason Anderson, Jack Covill, Greg Dachel and Susan Zukowski. Council president Dennis Doughty and council member Robert Hoekstra voted against.

Hoekstra said he can wait for the state to take action on a ban. “But I do think it’s a copout,” he said.

He added: “What if the state doesn’t do anything?”

Covill has been steadfast in his opposition to a ban.

“I would hope the bars and restaurant owners would do everything in their power to improve air quality,” Covill said.

The council also voted to move the city’s Parks and Recreation department offices to city hall and voted to amend an agreement for a development along Seymour Cray Sr. Boulevard.

For more on Tuesday’s meeting, see Wednesday’s printed edition of The Chippewa Herald.

" I thought this was a dead issue long ago. It seems like every couple weeks there is another vote regarding this. Give it up already.
I don't allow smoking in my house because it is my house. Some people I know allow smoking in their house.
The key here is that is THEIR HOUSE. "

" It is up to the owners of the establishments to do everything in their power to improve the quality of their business. It is also up to OSHA and other health governing agencies to hold businesses accountable, not the local city officials. It is not up to local city officials to ban something that is approved by the state and the government. I can't stand going to places where there is smoke, but I choose not to go there. Whether we like it or not, smoking is still a legal right. Putting a ban in place would cost the tax payers money, quite a bit of money. Our taxes would have gone up because of the loss of revenue and we would lose more city workers. It was the right decision to not change things, because if we would there would be at stake than just smoke, people would lose jobs! Also, there was PLENTY of time for health officials to make their presence known to the counsil. Also, not very professional to acuse people of copout's, do what's best for your community, after all, that's who you're supposed to represent. "

" Hey Denny and Bob,
Put that in your pipe and smoke it! "
