It’ll be all-or-nothing for McDonell now.
The Macks fought past Thorp, 3-2, Thursday night in a key West Cloverbelt Conference volleyball match. The win sets up a league-title deciding match with Eau Claire Regis Tuesday night in Eau Claire.
The Macks entered the season as the three time defending West Cloverbelt champions. But that streak could come to an end with a loss to the Ramblers, who currently lead the league.
Fighting past the Cardinals Thursday, 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 15-8, only helps McDonell coach Kat Roesler said.
“In one of the games we were up 15-6 and they came back to tie it. I thought about calling a timeout, but didn’t. They fought through it. It was a big change and confidence-booster,” she said.
Roesler said going into the match-up with the Cardinals that the meeting would be close. But the Macks (19-9, 6-1 WCC) behind some great work from the team’s back row.
“It’s amazing to see what happens when we dig a ball. We picked it up in Games 3, 4 and 5. We dug and we dug and we dug. That definitely won the game for us.
“We had a ton of digs tonight.”
Three girls alone combined for 56 digs. Mollie Meagher led the way with 24, followed by Leisha Brzozowski with 17 and Ashley Zumbrock with 15.
Karley Weinsch had 35 assists setting up the offense and three aces serving. Brittney Sloan had five block kills and nine kills hitting. Breanna Jenneman had four block kills.
Medford 3, Chi-Hi 0
At Medford, long serving rallies out of the Raiders served to be too costly for the Cardinals in the non-conference game, 21-25, 16-25, 21-25.
With the game being a non-league game, Chi-Hi coach Tim Upward said he also used some different line-up combinations on the floor to see what worked.
“It helped to keep the girls fresh and motivated,” he said.
Stephanie Kriehn led the Cardinals with six kills while the back row was led by Jessica Sykora’s 10 digs and perfect 9-for-9 serving with an ace. Lindsay Gaber had nine digs. Lori Kaeding started up the offense with 14 assists.
Lake Holcombe 3, Cornell 2
At Cornell, After going up 2-0 in the match, Cornell lost the next three in nail-biting fashion at home.
The two wins came 25-20, 25-22. The following losses were 17-25, 21-25, 15-17.
The Chiefs (5-6, 2-6 East Lakeland) were down 11-3 in the final game before tying it 13-13.
Coach Dale Yindra said the team showed resiliency in the final contest.
“We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole,” he said. “We left it all on the floor tonight, though, and played a pretty good match.”
