Prep roundup: Chi-Hi tennis falls; Cards soccer earns tie

In Chi-Hi’s open week before subsectionals, the Cards featured some competitive matches against Regis.

Coach Russ Borman said he has been scheduling Regis in the open week for a few years now and that he appreciates the late-season competition.

“It’s a nice tuneup” he said. “It keeps up our mental toughness.”

With the team coming one lengthy, back-and-forth match away from winning, Borman said the meet was successful.

Megan Randall won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while the top two doubles teams also came away victorious.

Vivian Carlson and Brooke McDonald took their No. 1 contest 6-1, 6-4 while Karley Nyhus and Alison Arneberg won 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 play.

The big test for Chi-Hi will be on Monday at subsectionals.

Borman said it’s up to the girls now.

“At this point, they understand my expectations,” he said. “Everything is in their hands.”

Soccer

Chi-Hi 2, Eau Claire North 2

It was better late than never for the Cardinals on Thursday.

The Chi-Hi offense scored the tying goal with 30 seconds to go in regulation at Eau Claire.

Down 2-1, the Cards (6-9-1, 3-5-1 BRC) got the ball with 45 seconds to go and moved downfield. Christian Schnobrich’s second assist led to Austin Shelby’s header and then a couple of scoreless overtimes.

Coach Ben Goeman said the late goal showed his team’s character.

“At that point, there are two things you can do — either play to win or let the game end,” he said. “Everyone was excited. I’ve never seen a game come down to the last 30 seconds and get a tying goal.”

Schnobrich’s first assist was during Teagen Warrick’s 49:58 score.

North followed that with scores at the 60-minute mark and 72-minute mark.

The defense held up to a North attack in the second half and stopped a Husky penalty kick in overtime. Tayler Schoenberg had five saves in the thrilling tie.

Goeman said he hopes the game will give his team momentum towards the end of the season.

“It was a big step to prove we can compete with the top teams in the conference,” he said. “It gives us a lot of confidence for the last few games and the playoffs.”
