Smoking ban appears dead in Chippewa Falls

A workplace smoking ban in Chippewa Falls appears to be a dead issue.

The city’s Transportation Committee, which oversees public safety issues, voted 3-0 on Wednesday in favor of not taking action on a smoking ban until the state does.

Voting in favor were council members Susan Zukowski, Jack Covill and Brian Flynn.

They agreed a smoking ban would cause economic hardship to city businesses at a time when the economy is struggling.

Council member Jason Anderson, who is not a member of the committee, said if a local ban was approved, smokers would go to bars in neighboring areas without a ban.

“I don’t know if banning it in a local municipality as small as our will be of any significance health-wise,” Anderson said.

Adding Anderson to the three committee members would produce a majority on the seven-member city council.

Flynn said everyone agrees that smoking is bad for people, but added, “To me, there needs to be an uniform law.”

For more on the committee’s vote, see Thursday’s printed edition of The Chippewa Herald.

" i have no opinion either way on the smoking ban except to say that how much are we willing to allow the government control our lives?? how can they say what we can and cannot do. There were nonsmoking bars in eau claire BEFORE the smoking ban. Its up to the business to decide wether or not they want it to be smoking. Its not impossible. If you cant stand the smell open a bar and make it non smoking for you and your friends! this is a free country i thought!!! "

" GDW, do yourself a favor and do not go into a place that clearly risks your health. Do you know what that stuff can do to you if you are exposed to large amounts?

Headaches, nausea and even heart problems. The research is clear. There have been countless studies done. Thats why we need to get this stuff banned ASAP. Stop exposing our children to this stuff. People say it is too addictive to stop. Some people say they NEED it. BULL.

It is time we step up to the plate and do what is right for our kids our familys and ourselves. Please stand with me to send a clear message to the council.

BAN IT NOW! BAN IT FOR GOOD!

Of course I am talking about coffee.

Have a day! "

" I guess I had thought the STATE had finally come to their senses and passed a NO SMOKING LAW. I stopped one night in Madison and the bars and restaurants there are smoke free and it was so enjoyable. Old U classmates and I had a great dinner and spent time in the lounge enjoying old stories from years ago. The same happened a night later with friends in Eau Claire. Last night I stopped at a local place in Chippewa Falls and met a friend for a drink. The smell was intolerable as we entered the lounge and I was going to leave at that point, however, my friend really wanted to chat. We ordered and I paid for the drink but had one sip and just said I just could not breathe so I'll have to go, then we left. We ended up having coffee at a coffee shop instead. WAKE up...this is a health issue. Do yourself a favor. It will not be pleasant in your later years with oxygen 24/7 and feeling like you are drowning. Please do not smoke in the presents of children. "

" I agree with the City on this topic. Eau Claire is a prime example of how the ban affects not only Tavern owners but all the negative press associated with this debate and has a "no win" solution on boths sides. I agree, children have "no say" when their parents take them out to eat and we should eventually have a partial ban. In the meantime people of Chippewa Falls have the best of both worlds and can drive 15 minutes to Eau Claire if they choose to be smoke free in an establishment that may be otherwise "smokey" in Chippewa Falls. Great Job City Council members. Now, on to the next topic. A dog park in Chippewa Falls? "

" Could it be? Some common sense on the city council? I think they made the best decision based on the facts. The ban would only force already cash strapped businesses to close with the loss of business to surrounding areas.

Nice job!! "
