A 24-year-old Chippewa Falls man was released on a $10,000 cash bond Monday after being arrested following an alleged hit-and-run to a pedestrian Saturday morning.
Daniel M. Sykora, 11 W. Vine St., was booked in the Chippewa County Jail on a charge of attempted homicide for allegedly intentionally hitting the pedestrian with his vehicle and then fleeing.
Sykora appeared in Judge Steven Cray’s court Monday morning via videoconference from the jail with public defender John Manydeeds.
District Attorney Jon Theisen requested a $50,000 cash bond due to the severity of a possible charge.
Theisen said the investigation is on-going, but so far he has gathered that there was some sort of verbal altercation early Saturday morning on Allen Street. After the altercation, Sykora went to his vehicle and drove it down Allen Street at 50-70 mph, striking Christopher D. Hochstetler, 29.
“The indication is Mr. Sykora made no attempt to stop,” Theisen said.
He also asked that a condition be made that Sykora is not to speak to anyone of the incident except his counsel or law enforcement as the investigation has not concluded.
Manydeeds argued for a $5,000 to $10,000 cash bond with Theisen’s condition removed.
He argued that Sykora and his family are tied closely to the community.
Cray decided on a $10,000 cash bail and struck Theisen’s extra condition. He did order that Sykora is to have no contact with Hochstetler or his family, and that Sykora not make threats or try to intimidate any witnesses.
Sykora has been ordered to appear in court again on Oct. 7. A criminal complaint is expected to be filed by that time. The jail booking charge of attempted murder does not mean that will be the charge actually filed in a complaint.
