UW-EC's Cabin music series planned

For the Herald

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced the fall semester schedule of performances in The Cabin, the Davies Center coffeehouse celebrating its 40th anniversary this season. The longest-running coffeehouse series in the nation, The Cabin provides free performances nearly every weekend and jazz concerts many Wednesday evenings.

The opening show by Andy Elwell at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, will be the first to showcase The Cabin’s completely renovated performance space. An indie folk musician based in Minneapolis, Elwell was born in Hibbing and spent his formative years playing punk rock in Duluth.

After moving to Minneapolis he recorded and toured for four years with the band Islero. In 2006 Elwell moved to southern California and began a solo career. The contrast inspired his songwriting process, culminating in an eight-song EP, “Different Places” (2006). Featured on over 200 college radio stations across the country, the recording has been licensed for use on MTV, Oxygen and Lifetime Television. Elwell is finishing a full-length disc for release this fall.

The Cabin schedule includes monthly open stage opportunities for campus and area talent, and performances by UW-Eau Claire students, faculty, staff, community members and nationally touring artists. All performances are produced and managed completely by student members of The Cabin committee of the Student Senate’s University Activities Commission.

Semester highlights

Featured artists include Ryan Horne (Sept. 12-13), Chastity Brown (Oct. 24-25), Tyler James (Nov. 7-8) and Derek James (Dec. 5-6). The professional artists are presented Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Open stage opportunities will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26; Saturday, Oct. 18; Friday, Nov. 21; and Saturday, Dec. 13. Anyone interested in performing is invited to sign up in the Student Senate office, Davies Center 132, before 4:30 p.m. on the day of the show.

Western Wisconsin’s finest jazz musicians will perform on select Wednesdays (Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29; Nov. 5, 12 and 19) at 8 p.m.

UW-Eau Claire students will perform classical music Tuesdays at noon in November (Nov. 4, 11, 18 and 25).

Cabin performances are free and open to all ages. For a complete schedule, contact the Activities and Programs office, (715) 836-4833, or visit the Cabin Web site at www.uwec.edu/studentsenate/uac/cabin.
