Political signs being ripped off in city

It’s prime time for the theft of political signs.

There have been at least three reports to Chippewa Falls Police this week of the stealing of signs in support of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

The latest happened at 8:53 p.m. Thursday when Richard T. Haughian, 620 Superior St., reported an Obama sign had been taken.

But the thieves aren’t forgetting Republican president nominee Sen. John McCain.

Lorretta R. Stolarz, 6150 34th St., Elk Mound, reported the theft of a McCain sign to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department.

Drunken driving crackdown yields results

A crackdown by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department on drunken driving from Aug. 15-Sept. 1 produced 237 traffic stops with 146 warnings and 148 citations.

During two weeks, there were 28 traffic crashes, including 11 with injuries and one with a fatality.

“Motorcycles were involved in three of the injury crashes as a result of striking animals. A motorcycle was also involved in the fatality in which alcohol was believed to be a factor,” the sheriff’s department said in a press release.

Chippewa County so far in 2008 has had six fatal crashes. Three of them have involved motorcycles and alcohol usage.

“We would urge those that choose to drink alcohol to ask a sober friend for a ride home instead of driving impaired,” the sheriff’s department said.

LaFayette considering comprehensive plan

The Town of LaFayette’s first step in shaping a comprehensive plan will take place at 7 p.m., Monday at the LaFayette Town Hall, 5794 197th St., Chippewa Falls.

The town’s Plan Commission will tell residents and business owners about the planning process and how residents can get involved.

People will be asked to participate in a workshop to find important issues that the plan should address.

Residents will also be able to ask questions about the planning process.

The town is working with the West Central Regional Planning Commission in developing a plan before a state deadline of December 2009.

More information can be obtained by calling Jay Tappen at 836-2918 or David Staber at 723-1193 Ext.103 or 726-1154.
