It’s the one weekend a year when wearing lederhosen is fashionable and nobody needs an MP3 player because you can listen to as much live polka music as you can handle.
The 6th Oktoberfest celebration at the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds in Chippewa Falls kicks off Friday with the noon announcement of the 2008 Festmeister and Festmeistern, who oversee the three day celebration.
They will be named at Leinenkugel’s Historic Barn on Jefferson Avenue, and then lead a procession to the fairgrounds.
The royalty will again be presented at the fairgrounds at 7:45 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Gordy’s County Market Familientreff Stage.
A sauerkraut-eating contest is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Gordy’s stage. The contest will be repeated at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The celebration on Saturday is designed for children, with two magic shows, a costume contest, puppets and German lessons.
There will be demonstrations from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mega Foods Festaal Building, and at 3 p.m., the Chippewa Falls Senior High School Marching Band will be in an on-grounds parade.
Sunday’s activities begin at 10 a.m. and feature a German auto show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The McDonell High School Marching Band will lead a on-ground parade at 1 p.m.
And, as usual, a fine assortment German food will be offered for sale, everything from sauerbraten to German potato salad to apple dumplings. There will also be a selection of Leinenkugel’s beer, Autumn Harvest Wine and non-alcoholic drinks available.
A three-day admission button sold in advance for adults is $12, or daily admission (sold at the gate) is $7. On Friday and Saturday, children ages 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. On Sunday, all kids are admitted free with a paid adult. The fee for grounds parking is $4 a day.
And Oktoberfest goers can get a break from the election year, because no political solicitations are allowed on the grounds during the celebration.
