UW-Eau Claire
Two Chippewa County students were among 21 students who received Blugold Promise Scholarships for the first time for the 2008-09 academic year at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Blugold Promise Scholarship Program is an ambitious program designed to provide support during the freshman and sophomore years for UW-Eau Claire students with great potential and hopes but limited financial means. The program provides $500 scholarships to incoming freshmen with demonstrated academic potential, and if the students remain focused and successful throughout their first year, they become eligible for a $1,000 award during their sophomore year. Typically, there are not as many scholarships available to sophomore students, so this program helps outstanding students bridge that gap until they become eligible for scholarships in their chosen majors, typically in the junior and senior years. Donors can support one Blugold Promise recipient through each gift of $1,500 over a two-year period or ensure ongoing scholarship support in their name by endowing the fund with a larger gift of at least $20,000.
Hannah Olson of Bloomer was one of three students awarded Richard and Carol Fulwiler Blugold Promise Scholarships. She is the daughter of Bob and Pam Olson. Dr. Richard Fulwiler graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a degree in chemistry in 1961. He is president of Technology Leadership Associates, Cincinnati, a consulting firm specializing in increasing individual effectiveness and building organizational capability in the health, safety and environmental arena. After 28 years with Procter & Gamble, he retired as director of Health & Safety-Worldwide. Fulwiler is also an adjunct professor at the College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati.
Stephanie Hanson of New Auburn, daughter of Kurt and Janene Hanson, was awarded a Ted and Valeria Lipinski Memorial Blugold Promise Scholarship. The scholarship was recently established by Neil Lipinski and his wife, Joanne Pappas, in memory of Lipinski's parents, who ran a family farm in Thorp. The scholarship is designated to go to a student with financial need from a family farm in Wisconsin, with preference given to students who are among the first generation in their families to attend college. Lipinski, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in political science and English and later earned an MBA from Northeastern University in Boston, is a partner in Colliers ABR, a commercial real estate brokerage firm in New York City.
Editor's note: College honor and graduate lists are still being received and printed by The Chippewa Herald over the coming weeks.
