Internet safety session offered Thursday

As more children reach for the Internet, a technology their parents didn’t have while growing up, Internet safety has become a concern.

An Internet safety session focusing on children will be held Thursday night.

Topics include local online risks, chatting, instant messaging, cyberbullying, social networking, Web pages and online predators. Presenters will show parents how to track their child’s Internet use and the signs that their child is the victim of an online predator.

All families are encouraged to attend the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Chippewa Falls Middle School auditorium.

The session is being presented by the Chippewa Falls School District, Chippewa Area Catholic Schools, Parents 4 Learning, the Chippewa Falls Police Department, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, the Wisconsin Department of Justice and Rutledge Charities.

" People should be more careful about what their kids do online. Don't be fooled by the little angels either. If they have a myspace account, you had better check it out. These little angels swear, pick fights, talk about sex, and all kinds of things you wouldn't think your 12 year old child is talking about. I know because I monitor my child's account like a hawk. You would be appalled at some of the things I've seen and these aren't child predators, either. They're the kids themselves. "

" Hey Chippewa County resident, I also wanted to say when I see a school or city or county taking steps to address this and prevent it, they deserve kudos. Where my son and I are, they say nothing can be done because they have no laws about it or any training to prevent it. Hats off to youl "

" I am so sorry you felt I was overshadowing all of your work. I never meant for that to happen. If parents are not educated hands and eyes on they will never learn exactly what their kids are seeing and doing online. My son was a victim of an imposter profile and cyber bullying as a result of the imposter profile. I know first hand the results that this has. After going through HELL and watching my son suffer I have become an avid supporter of any mission to help spread the word. Safewave and Debbie Johnston helped my son and I. There are no predators on iland5 since members can only be ages 5-18 and their id verified by their school. The site is content monitored 24/7 "

" Sparks thanks for the comment. However, when I read the comment, I felt you were trying to overhadow the hard work that is being put together with this presentation. I am one who will attend the above session. It is being sponsered by some very high profiles in the city, so it must be worth attending. As for your comment about no predators, how can you be sure your kids are actually talking to who they claim they are? "

" There is a social and educational networking site for children ages 5-18. This site requires the child's school to verify his or her identification before they can become a member. My son still plays games, IM, chat, email, build his own webpage and receive tutoring if he needs. There are no predators or cyber bullies on this site. Kids go to www.iland5.com and parents www.safewave.org
People Magazine Hero Debbie Johnston will be the guest Speaker at SafeWave Webinar September 25th 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST "
