Prep roundup: Chi-Hi soccer team romps in Rice Lake

RICE LAKE — The Chippewa Falls boys soccer team rebounded from its opening loss in league play with a 4-1 win on the road in Rice Lake.

The Cardinals were beaten in their Big Rivers Conference and home opener earlier this week by River Falls. Chi-Hi coach Ben Goeman felt his charges played well at times and poorly at others in the 4-3 loss.

Seemingly, there was some carry-over into Thursday’s contest.

“I felt like we didn’t play our best at the start,” he said. “I don’t know if we were taking them too lightly, but we did much better in the second half.”

The Cardinals had 26 shots in the first half but just Jordan Evans’ goal with an assist from Teagen Warrick to show for it.

Chi-Hi had 11 shots in the second half and three goals. Tye Kreutzfeldt, Charlie Zubal  and Warrick all scored. Jack Nelson assisted on Zubal’s goal and freshman midfielder Jason Faschingbaur helped on Warrick’s goal.

“We’ve had some injuries and Jason’s been a nice addition to our team,” Goeman said.

Taylor Schoenberg had two saves in the game as Chi-Hi limited the Warriors to four shots total.

Tennis

Eau Claire North 7, Chi-Hi 0

In Eau Claire, the Chippewa Falls girls tennis team was blanked in a match against the Huskies.

For Chi-Hi coach Russ Borman, he believes the loss had some positives.

“North is a very solid team this year. I still consider us a very good team, too. All of the matches were competitive,” he said.

Although over in straight sets, Borman said the No. 1 doubles matchup for Vivian Carlson and Brooke McDonald played well in a 5-7, 3-6 loss to Molly Devine and Sammie Swanson.

“Brooke and Vivian gained a lot from that one. Hopefully, we can take things from this tough loss and build on it,” Borman said.

Bloomer 5, Osceola 2

In Bloomer, a trio of three-set matches with lengthy third sets swung the balance in the Blackhawks’ favor.

The duo that Bloomer won occurred at the respective No. 1 flights.

Brittney LaGesse took down Chieftain Kayla Claassen 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 while Maranda Steinmetz-Robey teamed with Jessica Hartman to beat Sam Close and Molly Tomfohide 6-3, 0-6, 11-9.

The other lengthy set and match was Chieftain Dena Ferguson’s 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 win over Sasha Zwiefelhofer in No. 2 singles.

Bloomer split the other two singles matches while sweeping the doubles.
