Volleyball: Macks open West Cloverbelt with victory

McDonell opened the West Cloverbelt season with a 3-1 victory against Fall Creek Thursday night at home.

The Macks and Crickets dueled in four closely fought contests, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20.

The improvement of McDonell (5-3, 1-0 WCC) continues and coach Kat Roesler liked what she saw in the victory.

“We learned how to push through adversity. In volleyball, it’s such an up-and-down game, and we’re learning to not let one mental mistake turn into another mental mistake,” she said.

Christi Schoch led the Macks with 15 kills and she had four block kills. Breanna Jenneman and Brittney Sloan each had three block kills. Chrysta Brinkman added nine kills.

Sam Schemanauer had three aces serving for the Macks. Karley Weinsch had 41 assists and 10 digs while Mollie Meagher had 20 digs.

Chi-Hi 3, River Falls 0

At River Falls, Chippewa Falls opened up the Big Rivers Conference race with a sweep on the road, 25-16, 25-14, 25-11.

The Cardinals (5-5, 1-0 BRC) got the job done with solid serving as three girls were perfect from behind the line. Julie Johnson and Errin Boisvert were 10-for-10 serving while Alexa Vincent was 12-for-12.

Johnson finished with an ace and eight kills as she moved from the backcourt to the frontcourt.

“Julia played a good game for us,” first-year coach Tim Upward said. “She served well and tied for the lead for kills for us.”

Heather Hodnett was the other Cardinal with eight kills. Stephanie Kriehn added six kills and Kendra Bowe had four kills.

Bowe also was 13-for-15 serving with four aces. Vincent had five aces and Boisvert had three aces.

Vincent added 16 assists with Valerie Hayes having 10.

Altoona 3, Thorp 1

At Thorp, the Cardinals lost in their West Cloverbelt conference opener against Altoona, 12-25, 15-25, 25-23, 14-25.

Thorp (1-2, 0-1 WCC) moved from the East Cloverbelt to the West, starting this fall, in most sports.
