Clara M. Grassnickle




EAU CLAIRE — Clara M. (Borgwardt) Grassnickle, age 81, of 435 N. State St., Chippewa Falls, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Sacred Heart Hospital, in Eau Claire.

She was born March 25, 1927 on her grandfather’s farm west of Mondovi, the daughter of Edith (Nichols) and Frank Borgwardt. She grew up around Mondovi and after high school, went to Eau Claire to work as a dietary aide and in laundry at Luther Hospital.

Clara married George Grassnickle on June 18, 1955 in Mondovi. They moved to Milwaukee and lived there for many years. After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Rice Lake and then to Bruce where they lived until George’s death in 1999. In 2003, Clara moved to Chippewa Falls to be near her daughter.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls and its Ladies Aide. She enjoyed reading, sewing, doing puzzles and volunteering her time.

Survivors include one daughter, Beatrice Grassnickle of Chippewa Falls; one son, David (Kathy) Grassnickle of Watertown; two grandchildren, Adam and Cassandra “Cassie” of Watertown; a sister, Cleo Peuse of Eau Claire; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 44 years; a son in infancy, Vernon Lee Grassnickle; a granddaughter in infancy, Stephanie Grassnickle; a sister, Gladys Borgwardt; two sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 8 at Faith Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls with the Rev. Craig Mathews officiating. Burial will be in the Village of Bruce Cemetery in Rusk County.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel in Chippewa Falls is in charge of arrangements.
