The Chippewa Falls/McDonell girls swimming team has a youth movement underway as all but four are either sophomores and freshmen.
Christina DeRose enters her second season at the helm of the Cardinals program with four captains for this year: Amber Belohlavek, Cat Hoepner, Jackie Schaus and Hannah Wiseman.
Hoepner, Schaus and Wiseman all played big roles already in the early part of the season. Each swam well in a double dual against La Crosse Central and La Crosse Logan.
The team has to move on without the aid of Megan Robarge and Bridget Geissler — both of whom were multiple state qualifiers.
There are five incoming freshmen and five sophomores on the roster for this season, which should aid in Chi-Hi/McDonell’s standing.
In the double dual against the La Crosse schools, swimmers Sam Wilczek and Sara Kyes had top three finishes.
DeRose pegged Eau Claire Memorial, Menomonie and her own Cardinals are some of the top teams in the Big Rivers Conference. And, she’s got expectations for the fall, too.
“I expect another successful season this year,” she said. “Our team this year has heart and wants to be successful. They have already been working hard and this dedication will pay off in the end.
“Our goal, as a team, is to send swimmers to state this year.”
