State reprimands Chippewa Falls nurse

A Chippewa Falls licensed practical nurse is being reprimanded by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing for using cocaine in 2006 and 2007.

The action against Sharon C. Roback of 6425 193rd St., Chippewa Falls, was taken by the state board on June 5.

The board said on Dec. 5, 2006, that Roback submitted a urine sample that tested positive for cocaine, and she used cocaine on two other occasions in January 2007.

An alcohol and other drug assessment of Roback found she was not chemically dependent on cocaine.

She did receive medical assistance for depression and told the board she has not used cocaine or any other illegal drug since January 2007.

As part of the reprimand, the board ordered Roback:

-- Not to use any drug without a prescription and a valid medical purpose;

-- To submit to blood, urine, breath or hair samples when requested for analysis;

-- To pay $600 in costs by April 5, 2009. If she fails to pay, her nursing license will be suspended until she pays in full.

“Violation of any of the terms of this order may be construed as conduct imperiling public health, safety and welfare and may result in a summary suspension of (Roback’s) license,” the board’s order says.

" I think anyone in the medical field should
have random drug tests. A lot of factories
make their employees take drug test
because if employees are high and
working with equipment, an accident is
bound to happen sooner or later. A patients life may depend upon a nurse's
quick response and good judgement. I wouldn't want to put my life in the hands of someone who is on drugs. Would you? "

" So when are we going to start drug testing Nurses? I know a lot of them and none of them have ever had to be tested to get a job. This is crazy as we have a lot of production workers that get tested but the ones that have access to very potent drugs, don't every get checked. It isn't that hard to figure out. Maybe the hospitals are afraid they will lose too many employees due to failed tests. "
