Macks defeat Spooner, Rice Lake to start season

A doubleheader to start the soccer season?

That was no sweat for McDonell/Regis after it defeated Spooner and Rice Lake in succession Tuesday afternoon at Casper Park.

The Rails were defeated 6-2 in the early afternoon, with the Warriors taking a 4-1 loss later in the day.

The Macks scored four first-half goals against Spooner for a 4-1 halftime lead. Will Schifeling scored two goals in the first half, the first on an assist from Cory Arneson and the second on an assist by Lucas Roth.

James Gunderson opened the game with a goal less than 10 minutes in while Roth had a goal as well. Both Gunderson and Roth played their first varsity games Tuesday.

The Macks’ other scores came from Grant Mickesh and Ryan Kozuch. Mickesh received a crossing pass from Marc Santolin for a goal.

Kozuch capped the game with his goal. The defenseman raced down the field 70 yards, scampering past Spooner players, and scored unassisted.

“It was very cool,” Macks coach Tim Jenneman said.

Chris Eckes made eight saves in net, including one on a penalty kick.

Schifeling and Arneson took command for McDonell/Regis in the nightcap against Rice Lake. Arneson had a hat trick with Schifeling adding the fourth goal.

Jenneman said there were two more reasons why McDonell/Regis was able to earn its second win of the day.

“We had many people hurting and many non-starters stepped it up and played great,” he said, who also praised his team’s defense.

Eckes made 12 saves for the Macks for the victory.

The Macks play another doubleheader Thursday at Casper Park, against Amery and Mosinee.

“I just hope the kids are going to be ready Thursday, because of our four losses last year, two were against Amery and Mosinee,” Jenneman said. “There would be nothing better than getting even with a win.”
