Gilbertson to headline benefit concert

For the Herald

Chippewa Falls finger-style guitar wizard Greg Gilbertson will be the featured performer at the seventh annual Evening of Acoustic Music benefit concert on Saturday, Aug. 9 at Chetek Lutheran Church, 1419  Second St., Chetek. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.

Admission to this special “unplugged” concert is by one or more non-perishable food or personal hygiene item for the Chetek Food Shelf. There will also be a free-will offering and silent auction to benefit the food shelf. Refreshments will be available during intermission.

Gilbertson has been playing his mind-blowing acoustic instrumentals for 16 years in the Midwest and across the country. Gilbertson holds his own among guitar greats like Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Billy McLauglin and Willy Porter. He has performed at several venues in the Chippewa Valley, and co-headlined the EAM benefit last year.

This year’s silent auction, coordinated by Laurie Adams of Chetek, will include numerous items from local artists and merchants. Businesses or individuals willing to donate new items to the auction may contact Laurie at laadams@chibardun.net or (715) 924-3759.

Concert organizer Greg Adams of Chetek said the food shelf becomes desperately low during the summer months, as there are no “giving” holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving to remind people to donate.

Adams, who is also an English teacher at Chippewa Falls Senior High School, began the EAM concerts in 2002 as a way to restock the food shelf and raise awareness of the summer shortage. He’s been extremely pleased with the community’s generosity over the years, and with the current economic situation, in addition to high gas prices, has put a strain on many local families whose only assistance might be the food shelf.

Right now, the most-needed items for the food shelf include pancake mix and syrup, noodles, personal care items (shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene supplies, etc.), toilet paper, laundry soap, flour and sugar, canned and boxed soups, peanut butter, canned beans, tuna or canned chicken and vegetable oil.
