Increased enforcement of Wisconsin’s seat belt law over two weeks led the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department to make 288 stops.
The statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign is intended to increase seatbelt use. The Sheriff’s department asked officers to concentrate on traffic enforcement while not taking calls.
During the 228 stops, 125 citations and 103 warnings were issued.
However, officers also investigated 26 crashes during those two weeks, seven of which resulted in injuries and two of which were fatalities. According to the department, speed and alcohol were factors in most of those crashes.
