Main Street program earns state awards

A Chippewa Falls business won a 20-year award, while another was named the states best new downtown business at the Wisconsin Main Street 20th Anniversary Gala and 18th Annual Awards Reception on May 22 in Madison.
The Wisconsin State Main Street program recognized Chippewa Falls for reaching the milestone of combined public and private reinvestment of $85.3 million for a community with a population of 5,000 – 15,000.
Chippewa Falls Main Street began in 1989 and holds second place in total combined public and private reinvestment during its tenure as a Main Street community and among the 34 Main Street communities.
The Shoe Factory Apartments received an award that carried this message, “Gov. Jim Doyle and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce hereby recognize Shoe Factory Apartments, Chippewa Falls, 20 Year Award – Best Adaptive Reuse Project”.
The building was an eyesore for many years.It had been the target of vandals and was the home to many pigeons. In 1994 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In late spring of 1995 the renovation was completed and opened with 32 unique apartments.
Bridge St. Station, 212 N. Bridge Street opened on August 17, 2007 and won the 2007 Wisconsin Main Street Award for the Best New Downtown Business. Owner Don Baker created a destination in the downtown that melds two American classics-hamburgers and trains.
Lucy’s Delicatessen, owned by Deb Linc and Cindi Pulver, opened in July 2007 and received the 2007 Wisconsin Main Street Honorable Mention Award for the Best Interior Renovation Project. The owners remodeled the space to emulate a New York deli where homemade soups, salads, hot and cold deli sandwiches, entrees, a kids menu and fresh bakery items are offered.
Jamie Leibrandt was recognized as a member of the 2007 Honorary Board Member of Wisconsin Main Street.
The state recognized Jim Schuh for 16 years of service to Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls Main Street communities as an executive director.
