The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a report of a motor vehicle stop by someone who may have been impersonating a law enforcement officer.
The woman reported that around 3:15 a.m. Sunday an unmarked tan pickup showing a red light by the rear view mirror and a red light on top pulled her over near County G in the Boyd area.
The operator was a man between 20-30 years old wearing a blue short-sleeved polo shirt and blue jeans, with no police equipment or identification. He went back to his truck and appeared to be calling in some information, but did not issue any warning or citation.
Law enforcement has no record of such a stop by an officer.
Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said every officer is issued a badge and an identification indicating the agency of employment and status. He said off-duty officers may occasionally attempt a stop on seeing an egregious violation, and they would know their call number and agency even if they did not have their badge and ID with them.
A person suspicious of a stop can call 911 on a cell phone and the dispatch center would be able to determine the legitimacy of the person, Kowalczyk said.
