Spectrum Industries, Inc. of Chippewa Falls was recently honored with awards from both state and federal government officials.
In April, Spectrum was announced as one of the winners of Governor Jim Doyle’s annual Governor’s Procurement Awards. Also, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced Spectrum as one of the winners of the 2007 GSA Evergreen Awards
Spectrum Industries is a leading manufacturer of computer and office furniture, store displays and fixtures. Founded in 1968, Spectrum has designed and manufactured more than 3,000 products for office, plant, educational, governmental and retail environments. Spectrum’s products can be found in over 10,000 facilities across the United States.
Governor’s Procurement Awards recognize state firms particularly successful in federal procurement. Spectrum’s federal sales have shown major growth over the last five years.
“Between 2000-2006, the number of Wisconsin companies winning federal contracts increased more than fivefold,” Doyle said. “Nearly 4,000 Wisconsin companies are winning these contracts and building our state’s job and investment base. I’d like to especially congratulate the winners of this year’s Governor’s Procurement Awards for the excellence of their products and their diligence, persistence and commitment.”
Spectrum won the award in the small business category.
The Wisconsin Procurement Institute (WPI) annually hosts the Governor’s Procurement Awards Dinner. Established in 1987, WPI helps state companies sell products and services to federal, state, local agencies and prime contractors; navigates government procurement process for small firms; and helps firms develop competitive processes and technical capabilities to earn federal contracts. GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. GSA provides federal agencies with office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services.
The Evergreen Award program recognizes efforts in recycling, affirmative procurement and waste reduction.
Spectrum Industries received the Evergreen Award under the Furniture category.
Spectrum has become a model facility in both their industry and community by implementing environmental sustainability initiatives that include waste prevention, material recovery and recycling, and environmentally conscious product design.
Since 1998, Spectrum has used powder-coating technology as a replacement for solvent-based finishes, reducing the combined air emissions of Volatile Organix Compounds (VOCs) by 60 percent.
Spectrum has also teamed up with another firm, Comprehensive Recycling, to collect and recover plastic material resulting from the manufacturing process for recycling and reuse. When Spectrum acquired a new manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters in 2005, they purchased several acres of wetland which they will continue to preserve in all future expansions and facility improvements.
In 2007, Spectrum installed a new environmentally conscious paint line and wash system in this facility, which saves energy by operating at room temperature, eliminating the need to heat the wash solution. During the wash any excess cleaning solution is captured, filtered and recycled.
