Chi-Hi honors nine excelling in science




The Chippewa Falls Senior High School Science Department is pleased to announce its Science Students of the Month for March.

Freshman Lexi Bengston, the daughter of Wendy and Steven Bengston, was nominated by her physical science teacher, Mrs. Holzinger.

“I nominated Lexi for many reasons,” Holzinger said. “Lexi has a 101 percent score for 3rd quarter with only 1 week left of the quarter. Obviously, she has taken advantage of some extra credit opportunities, but it also shows that she does consistent, excellent work. She is will organized and has good study skills.

“In addition to her great academic work. Lexi is also a very friendly person who works well with others. She has a great smile and always has a positive attitude that is contagious. I feel very fortunate to have Lexi as a student in my 7th hour class and would predict that Lexi will continue to be on of Chi-Hi’s outstanding students as she continues her high school education.”

Lexi doesn’t not have any specific plans at this time, she is planning on attending college, possibly the University of Minnesota. Her anticipated area of study in the veterinary field. Some of her hobbies and interests include soccer, cross country, taking care of and training her horses. She is also involved in FFA, 4-H and Trinity Equestrian.

Lexi was home schooled until high school, and chose her mom as her most influential teacher.

“She gave me a lot of individual attention and made school projects fun,” Lexi said.

Senior Chelcie Puetz, the daughter of Cindy Puetz, was nominated by her human anatomy teacher, Mrs. Jenke.

“Chelcie is a very impressive student earning near perfect scores on all work,” Jenke said. “She utilizes the time given in class to complete assignments and to ask clarifying questions to increase her understanding of current material. Her desire to achieve at a high level and her work ethic are as strong as any student I have ever worked with. Keep up the good work, Chelcie!”

Chelcie would like to attend University of Minnesota Mankato, her anticipated areas of study are dental hygiene and pre-dentistry. Some of her hobbies and interest include shopping, ice skating, science, hanging out with friends and work. Chelcie is involved with 4-H and has been involved with Girl Scouts and Relay for Life.

Chelcie attended St. Charles, Holy Ghost, and Our Lady of Peace Elementary Schools. She chose Mrs. Butler from Notre Dame Middle School as her most influential teacher.

“She taught me how to give my first real speeches and that even an eighth-grader can write a college length paper,” Chelcie said. “It was a family history paper that ended up 24 pages long.”

Freshman Stephanie Hessler, the daughter of Lavane and Donald Hessler, was nominated by her physical science teacher, Mrs. Holzinger.

“Stephanie is an outstanding student in my fifth hour physical science class,” Holzinger said. “She has continued to improve since the year began and now has 98 percent average for third quarter. While Stephanie always takes advantage of extra credit opportunities, she also does consistent high quality work.

“Stephanie never hesitates to ask questions when she needs to and she is a very conscientious person. She is involved in many things including being a member of the Student Emergency Response Team here at Chi-Hi. It is my privilege and pleasure to nominate Stephanie as science student of the month for March.”

Stephanie would like to attend college she is unsure where, she is interested in becoming a radiologist or a radiology technician. Some of her hobbies and interests include Karate, church youth group, SERT (Student Emergency Response Team) and Kids of the King Aide at church.

Stephanie attended Southview and Hillcrest Elementary Schools. She chose Mrs. Baydarian from Southview Elementary as her most influential teacher.

“She was one of the funniest teachers ever, she found the best way to teach me, and made school fun,” Stephanie said.

Freshman Kristin Subera, the daughter of Lori and Scott Subera, was nominated by her physical science teacher, Mrs. Holzinger.

“Kristin is one of the most conscientious students I have ever had,” Holzinger said. “She always strives to do her very best and has earned a 97 percent for third quarter in physical science. Kristin is a detail person, which is a great quality to have when studying science, especially when doing lab work. When she does need help, which isn’t very often, Kristin is sure to ask for assistance and she will stay with her questioning until she is sure she understands.

“She also participates well in class, volunteering to answer questions. With her intensity and dedication to learning. I would predict that Kristin will do well in whatever classes she chooses to take. I am very fortunate to have her in my class.”

Kristin would like to attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to pursue a career as a second-grade teacher. Some of her hobbies and interests include singing, reading and walking. She is also involved with Agnes’ Table for Luther Midelfort and P.A.L.S.

Kristin attended Parkview and Jim Falls Elementary Schools. She chose Mrs. Belonge from Chippewa Falls Middle School as her most influential teacher.

“She let me branch out and explore what my abilities are,” Kristin said.

Sophomore Deanna Schultz, the daughter of Denise Roach, was nominated by her biology teacher, Mr. Cloutier.

“Deanna is a thoughtful and mature young lady,” Cloutier said. “She has a strong work ethic and natural talent for life science. Her work is always complete and done well.”

Deanna would like to attend University of Wisconsin-Madison, to pursue a career in the medical field. Some of her hobbies and interests include playing guitar and participating in the Color Guard. She plans to volunteer at the hospital this summer.

Deanna attended Hillcrest Elementary. She chose Mrs. Schemberger as her most influential teacher.

“The way she taught and her positive attitude allowed me to obtain better writing skills that I have continued to use throughout high school,” Deanna said.

Senior Christine Tzanakis, the daughter of Barbara and Mike Tzanakis, was nominated by her human anatomy teacher Mrs. Jenke.

“Christine has developed into a very serious student using every moment available to complete her work,” Jenke said. “In addition, she has earned top grades in my class throughout the year. I am extremely impressed with her strong work ethic and her positive attitude toward learning. Keep up the good work, Christine!”

Christine is planning on attending the University of Minnesota to get her undergraduate degree in pre-occupational therapy and then continue at the University of Minnesota to get her graduate degree.

Some of her hobbies and interests include volleyball, traveling, spending time with family and friends. She is also involved with Project Redbird, being a greeter at First Presbyterian Church, nursery attendant, Cardinal Crush volleyball coach, St. Joseph’s Hospital Charity Events and Chippewa County Humane Association.

Christine attended Hillcrest Elementary School. She chose Mrs. Leuthe from Hillcrest Elementary as her most influential teacher.

“She taught the class how to be independent and learn to do things in your own way,” Christine said. She was extremely funny and made 5th grade enjoyable.”

Sophomore Aidan Kraus, the daughter of Pam and Jeff Kraus, was nominated by her biology teacher Mrs. Rubisch.

“Aidan demonstrates excellent grasp and mastery of concepts, excellent work ethic and superior test scores,” Rubisch said. “Her homework is thoroughly done and she asks questions.”

Aidan would like to further her education and hopes to find a fulfilling career, as of now has not chosen one. Aidan enjoys spending time with friends and family, soccer, swimming, running, photography, traveling and playing the drums. She has also been involved with Thanksgiving dinner and volunteering at the Nursing Home.

Aidan attended Ridgeway Elementary in Colorado, Red Bird Elementary, Larkspur Elementary in Arizona, and Halmstad Elementary. She chose Mrs. Francis from Halmstad as her most influential teacher.

“Mrs. Francis truly cared for every one of her students, and always encouraged our class to push ourselves to do our best,” Aidan said. “She taught us many lessons beyond those in our textbooks.”

Sophomore Bryan Dean, the son of Lisa Dean and Steve Dean, was nominated by his pre-AP chemistry teacher, Ms. Schaaf.

“Bryan has consistently submitted excellent quality work from the beginning of the school year,” Schaaf said. “A serious student, Bryan provides insightful contributions to classroom discussions as well as responses on assignments and tests.”

Bryan would like to attend college he has not yet decided where, his anticipated areas of study are mechanical engineering and architectural. Some of his hobbies and interest include golf, tennis, reading, video games, biking, skiing, boy scouts and band. He is also involved in Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow.

Bryan attended Hillcrest Elementary and chose Ms. Jenneman form Hillcrest as his most influential teacher.

“She really got me interested in math and science, and taught me a lot,” Bryan said.

Sophomore Madeline Gehrig, the daughter of Linda and Mike Gehrig, was nominated by her biology teacher, Mrs. Rubisch.

“She is an exceptional student on her homework, labs, quizzes and test,” Rubisch said. “She thinks in-depth and has an excellent work ethic, she is an active listener and it is obvious that she learns something new every day.”

Madeline would like to attend college, she is considering the University of Minnesota or the University of  Wisconsin-Madison. Her anticipated areas of study are history, literature or biology, she would like to possibly be a teacher.

Some of her hobbies and interests include cross country, running, soccer, reading, spending time with friends, and listening to music. She is also involved with the Winding River Review and various things for Chippewa Valley Bible Church.

Madeline attended St. Charles and Holy Ghost Elementary Schools. She chose Mrs. Butler from Notre Dame as her most influential teacher.

“She encouraged me to think outside the box and grow as a person,” Madeline said.
