Prep golf: Macks finish 6th of 14

Playing beneath blue skies and sunshine, the McDonell golf team shot in the middle of the pack at the 14-team Cloverbelt/Dairyland Invitational Monday at Lake Wissota Golf Course.

John Olson led the way with a team-low 40, netting him a top-10 finish. Overall, the Macks came in sixth with a team score of 183.

“John (Olson) has been shooting right around his average,” McDonell coach Archie Sherbinow said. “It’s nice to have someone like that who can go out and give you a consistent effort. That’s what we’re going to need from him all season.”

Aside from Olson, two other Macks shot in the 40s. Josh Hanzlik stroked a 45 while Joe Dubiel ended with a 48. Pat Bradley and Mitch Kaiser rounded out the scoring for McDonell with a 50 and 51, respectively.

Eleva-Strum, of the Dairyland Conference, won the competition with a 150. Mosinee, which came in second, put in the lowest score for the Cloverbelt with a 159.

“The competition was very good out there,” Sherbinow said. “Eleva-Strum had some really low scores. They just have a great group of athletes.”

The Cardinals’ Ryan Knutson earned medalist honors with a 36. Four others — three from Eleva-Strum — shot 37s.

Cadott, which came in 12th with a 192, was led by Brent Foiles’44.

Cardinals struggle at Memorial

EAU CLAIRE — The Chi-Hi golf team had a rough day on the course, finishing tied for fifth with a 159 at the Big Rivers Conference meet at Wild Ridge.

“Our putting was off,” Chi-Hi coach Rick Silloway said. “Everyone else played really well and we just struggled.”

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Jamie Krula’s 37. Ryan McDowell was close behind with a 38. Everyone else on Chi-Hi shot in the 40s.

“We have quite a few matches next week,” Silloway said. “We are probably going to shake things up a little.”

Hudson won the meet with a 151. Dan Nelson of Menomonie and Eau Claire Memorial’s Brady Keegan shared medalist honors with 36s.
