Area athletes making a splash in spring sports




MACOMB, Ill. — Becky Allen is at it again.

The Stanley-Boyd alum played well for Western Illinois during the Summit League Golf Championships last week, scoring a 76 and finishing sixth overall.

Allen, a junior, scored a three-day total of 237 with her best round coming on the final day. She shot a 76.

For the third straight year, Allen received all-league honors. This season she was given second team all-conference honors from the Summit League.

Allen is also the second woman in WIU history to receive all-league honors.

Scheidler nears end

McDonell alum Brandon Scheidler is just a handful of regular season games from wrapping up his collegiate career with UW-Stevens Point.

The senior is the third-best hitter for the 21st-ranked Pointers with a .385 batting average. He also has four home runs and 31 RBIs through 35 games played this season. He leads the team in hits with 50.

His batting average is also ninth-best in the WIAC and his total hits are tied for third in the league.

The Pointers are in third place in the WIAC, behind UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh.

The WIAC tournament starts next weekend at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids.

Burish second best La Crosse pole vaulter

Jeremiah Burish is turning into one of the better pole vaulters for UW-La Crosse this spring.

The Cadott freshman has a season high of 15 feet and ¾ of an inch in the event, scored at the Phil Esteen Challenge.

Burish’s height is the second best on the Eagles team heading into the WIAC championships this weekend in Eau Claire.

Burish isn’t the only athlete from the area competing for the Eagles track team. Jenna Starck of Cadott and Christy Bohl, who went to McDonell, are also on the team.

Starck has a team-high height in the high jump of 5 feet, 1 inch, set at the Wartburg Twilight.

Bohl set team highs in the discus and the shot put. Her best throw in the discus is 134 feet, 4 inches and her best throw in the shot put is 44 feet, 4 inches.

She also has a best hammer throw of 130 feet and her best distance in the javelin is 98 feet, 4 inches.

Bloomer’s Belger among throng at Drake Relays

UW-Superior freshman Megan Belger and her Yellowjacket teammates were participants at the prestigious Drake Relays.

Belger ran a leg of the 400-meter relay at the event in Iowa, one of the most famous track events in the world. The quartet ran a time of 53.01 in a qualifier.

The sprinter also ran part of the 800-meter relay. The Yellowjackets completed a qualifier in 1:52.85.

She was also involved in a sprint medley relay.

Trio place for Blue Devils in Oshkosh

UW-Stout’s Shane Jackson, Sam Mayer and Vince Tuminello placed for the Blue Devils at the Titan Invitational last weekend at UW-Oshkosh.

Mayer won the discus throw at the Titan Invite with a throw of 137 feet, 9 inches. She also took seventh in the shot put (38 feet, ¼ inch) and 12th in the hammer throw (130 feet, 7 inches).

Jackson, a Chi-Hi alum, took sixth in the triple jump (40 feet, 11½ inches) and eighth in the high jump (6 feet, 1½ inches).

Tuminello, who graduated from McDonell last year, finished ninth in the pole vault (14 feet, 1¾ inches).
