Prep softball: Cardinals stay perfect

By The Chippewa Herald

Chippewa Falls’ softball team figured out Hudson’s Brittney Krieg just enough to earn a doubleheader sweep against the Raiders and their college-bound pitcher.

Chi-Hi (9-0, 6-0 BRC) earned Big Rivers Conference wins of 3-2 and 6-4 against Krieg, who’s headed to St. Cloud State.

“They were ranked No. 5 in the pre-season,” Chippewa coach Jared Faherty said. “They’re always a good team.

“They didn’t play very well against North and made a lot of errors. Tonight, they didn’t make any errors.”

Rachel Hartman’s two-RBI double in the sixth inning was the difference the opener. It allowed Christina Korger to get the win with a four-strikeout performance. Mikayla Hogan also had a home run in the game.

The top of the second-ranked Cardinals’ batting order shined in the night cap.

“We got 10 of our hits out of our first four batters,” Faherty said.

Katrina Nelson and Hogan each had three hits as Nelson had two RBIs. Jordan Hubin and Hartman collected two hits.

Korger earned the win in relief of Kendra Bowe. Korger pitched the final three innings and scattered three hits and struck out three.

Krieg relieved Kristin Feisil for fifth-ranked Hudson (3-4, 2-4 BRC) and allowed the game-winning runs on four hits and a walk.

The Cardinals still must play Eau Claire North, a big task considering both schools are unbeaten in the BRC. The two schools meet next week.

Bloomer 2-7, Ladysmith 1-4

In Bloomer, the Blackhawks knocked the Lumberjills from on top of the Heart O’North standings with a doubleheader sweep.

In both games, Bloomer fought back from deficits late in the game to earn the win. The Blackhawks needed an extra inning in the opener to start the momentum.

Greta Gumness smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth for the win in the first game. She drove in three of Bloomer’s four runs.

In the second game, Bloomer scored three runs in the final two frames for the victory.

Bloomer coach Dale Yindra said the victories were big for the teams in terms of confidence and to lift the team into the HON race.

“It was quality wins for us and we have two big games coming up this weekend against Fall Creek and Elk Mound,” he said. “We’re going to get seeded with them (in the playoffs).”

Amanda Abrahamson hit a triple in each game for Bloomer (3-3, 3-2 HON).

Mel Felix pitched both games and finished with 12 strikeouts in 15 innings with two walks — both of which were in the opener.

Morgan Neisinger took the losses for Ladysmith (5-3, 3-3 HON).

Thorp 2, Greenwood 0

In Thorp, it was all Jeni Luzinski as the Cardinals stayed unbeaten in East Cloverbelt Conference action.

Luzinski tossed a complete game where she allowed only two hits to go with 12 strikeouts. At the plate, she drove in a run with a double in the bottom of the first. Nadine Romag added the other RBI in the same inning with a double for the Cardinals (9-2, 7-0 ECC).
