The candidates’ last names were about the only thing that was close about Steve Hinke’s re-election bid for the Stanley-Boyd School Board Tuesday night.
When all the write-in ballots were counted, the school board president was beaten by a write-in candidate, Mike Henke, 560-384.
Incumbent Kathleen Benzschawel withstood a write-in effort for another three-year term on the board. She drew 529 votes, compared to 312 for write-in candidate Julie Spaeth.
A third seat was up for election Tuesday, with Jacqueline Holub winning handily with 758 votes.
In the Hinke-Henke race, Steve Hinke won the city of Stanley 173-141, and the town of Colburn 44-27.
But Mike Henke, who currently serves on the Stanley City Council and had served on the Chippewa County Board until not running for re-election Tuesday, won the remaining portions of the school district.
Henke’s biggest advantage came from the village of Boyd and the towns of Edson and Delmar. He won Boyd by a 117-33 margin, Edson 85-29 and Delmar 100-53.
Henke also won the Clark County townships of Thorp (35-9) and Worden (27-25), the Eau Claire County town of Wilson (14-11), and Taft in Chippewa County (14-7).
In the Benzschawel-Spaeth race, the incumbent won by large margins in Stanley (214-53), Colburn (57-8) and Worden (37-7), while Spaeth enjoyed a big win in Boyd (91-56).
The other townships were split fairly evenly, with Benzschawel winning Delmar 70-62, Thorp 21-17, Wilson 13-12 and Taft 11-9. Spaeth took Edson by a 53-50 margin.
