EAU CLAIRE — A ban on smoking in most public places in the city of Eau Claire, starting in July, has won approval of the City Council.
The 7-4 vote will make smoking illegal in taverns and other workplaces. Certain areas of the city will be exempt, including home-based businesses and private residences.
Eau Claire will become the fifth Wisconsin community to prohibit public smoking, joining Madison, Appleton, the Milwaukee suburb of Shorewood and the Madison suburb of Shorewood Hills.
Fitchburg, another Madison suburb, has adopted similar legislation but still allows public smoking at several locations.
