Rachele Morley and Jared Jasper added one more hockey honor to their senior seasons as each was given the 2008 Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
The award there to recognize great character and sportsmanship by high school hockey players, one per high school team. It’s used as an extension of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award given to the country’s top collegiate hockey player and sportsman.
Jasper played through a winless season with the Macks this year. Despite the tough years with McDonell/Regis, he displayed great character.
“Throughout high school, it’s common for kids to get riled up. (With) Jared, I cannot remember when he’s done anything like that,” said Macks coach Don Loew. “He’s controlled (and) very respectful. He’s always willing to help out and willing to make the team better.
“He’s one of the kids that anyone could coach. He’s such a good kid.”
Jasper was one of more than 60 players in the state to receive the award from their teams.
Morley is one of 12 girls recipients, and only one other girl from the Big Rivers Conference received the award.
She skated as one of the top defensemen for Chi-Hi/McDonell’s hockey team this winter. Morley scored more than 15 points this season, including 12 assists.
