A forum featuring the candidates for the Chippewa County Circuit Court third branch judge’s seat will be held Wednesday, March 19 at the Heyde Center for the Arts, 3 High Street, Chippewa Falls.
The event, beginning at 7 p.m., is co-sponsored by the the Chippewa Herald, the Chippewa Falls Branch of The American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Community Television. The forum will air on the public access channel Friday through Monday.
Chippewa Falls attorneys Julie Anderl and Steve Cray are running for the open seat, created when the stated added a third court branch with legislation passed last year. Anderl and Cray were the two winners in a primary election held Feb. 19 and will face off in the April 1 general election. The winner will take office in August.
The format will be similar to the forum held last year, featuring Anderl and incumbent Judge Thomas Sazama, who ultimately won re-election to his Branch 2 seat. Herald Assistant Editor Mark Gunderman and representative from the AAUW Mary Ann King will co-moderate the forum, set for one hour.
Candidates will be allowed opening and closing statements and will then be asked questions about judicial issues or their personal backgrounds. Candidates will not be asked about any specific cases, nor will they be asked to discuss how they might rule in a hypothetical situation. Questions will focus instead on improving the judicial system, innovations in criminal justice, efficiency in operation of the courts, or similar issues.
The public is invited to suggest questions for the candidates by e-mail to editor@chippewa.com. Audience members may also submit questions, but will not question the candidates directly.
Public access television, Channel 12 on the Charter Communications system, will air the forum March 21 at 1 p.m., and again March 22, 23 and 24 at 6 p.m. each night. Additional dates will be added.
