Kirihara, Stiles honored for English excellence

For the Herald - The Chippewa Falls Senior High School English Department is pleased to announce its February English Students of the Month.

Senior Caitlin Kirihara, the daughter of Donald Kirihara and Denise Kervin, was nominated by her English teacher, Katherine Gibbon-Lee.

“Caitlin Kirihara is an easy choice for English Student of the Month,” Gibbon-Lee said. “She consistently has proven her conscientious work ethic and exceptional writing skills in my advanced composition and AP English classes. It is obvious Caitlin really cares about the quality of her work and I can always count on her for lively contributions to class discussions. It is a real pleasure to have a person in class who demonstrates her academic standards and won’t settle for less.”

Caitlin is involved with the NHS and Athena, both of which are national-based volunteer organizations.

Her interests include writing, painting, drawing, and playing the saxophone, guitar, piano, and flute. She also enjoys karate, where she is at the brown belt level.

Caitlin plans on attending UW-Madison next year and majoring in psychology. Her goal is to become a criminal psychologist or a criminologist.

Junior Rochelle Stiles, the daughter of John and Sandra Stiles, was nominated by her English teacher, Warren Bowe.

“Rochelle was a student in my English 9 class two years ago,” Bowe said. “Currently, she is in my AP English language and composition class. Rochelle is every writing teacher’s dream! Whether she is writing fiction or an essay, her writing is filled with voice and excellent word choice. Every project or paper she has completed for me — from her “Odyssey” scrapbook freshman year to her most recent writing project for “As I Lay Dying” — has exceeded my expectations.

“Many times I have asked Rochelle for permission to keep her projects as examples of excellence for future classes. Besides taking constructive criticism extremely well, Rochelle is a hardworking, humble and humorous writer.”

Her interests include reading, listening to music, playing the violin, walking dogs at Lake Wissota Animal Hospital, performing with the Central Lutheran Church bell choir, and dancing at the Academy of Dance.

She enjoys teaching the youth at Central Lutheran Church, volunteering weekly at the Chippewa County Humane Association, being a member of girl scouts, and being a part of the Voyager program at the Chippewa Falls Middle School.

Rochelle plans on attending a four-year college and majoring in zoology and possibly photography.
