CV Symphony ‘New World’ concert planned Saturday

For the Herald - Music with an American theme will highlight the Chippewa Valley Symphony’s March concert, “From the New World,” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 at The State Regional Arts Center in downtown Eau Claire.

The orchestra, conducted by Nobuyoshi Yasuda, will perform two selections by American composer Aaron Copland, “Fanfare for the Common Man” and “Rodeo.” Copland helped define a 20th century American sound, and his influence on his contemporaries and students has been tremendous.

The concert also will feature the winner of the Kristo Orthodontics Young Artist Competition, held Jan. 20 at the UW-Eau Claire Haas Fine Arts Center. Pianist Mark Van de Loo, a junior at Memorial High School, will perform his winning selection, Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, I movement.

Van de Loo was among six finalists in the competition. The other finalists included pianist Anne-Marie Giuca, Janesville; flutist Jeiran Hasan, Woodbury, Minn.; violinist Julia Johnson, Chippewa Falls; flutist Maggie Schenk, Madison; and pianist Kate Van de Loo, Eau Claire.

The orchestra will conclude the concert with Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” which Antonin Dvorak composed in 1893 during a visit to the United States. It is by far his most popular work and one of the most popular symphonies in the modern repertory.

Prior to the concert, students from North and Memorial high school orchestras, under the direction of Soma Pierce-Smit, will perform on stage from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

In keeping with the Symphony’s ongoing focus on education, orchestra members visited third grade music classes in public and parochial schools in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls and Altoona in February. They explained and demonstrated their instruments and passed out vouchers to attend the March concert with a paying adult. Over 1,000 third graders learned about the orchestra through these presentations.

Local art students also got involved, creating art inspired by recordings of the concert music. Their art will be on display at the ECRAC Gallery March 3-14. Concert goers are invited to visit the gallery during intermission or following the March 8 concert.

Tickets for the March concert are available at the CVS office by calling (715) 832-6366. Single tickets are $18 for adults, $17 for seniors, $8 for youth/students, or $50 for a family.
