MENOMONIE — Chippewa Falls’ girls basketball team must have left its hot shooting in Rhinelander.
The Cardinals went on the road and, despite 29.8 percent shooting, beat Menomonie in the regular season finale Friday, 41-38.
Chi-Hi shot well to start off a rout of the Hodags in non-league play Tuesday. The converse happened against the Indians in Big Rivers play.
“It was ugly. They were leading us almost the whole game,”Cardinals coach Jeff Dahl said.
The game wound up coming down to a couple of key plays from Emily Mattison and Lori Kaeding.
With 50 seconds remaining, Mattison sank a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a two-point lead.
Kaeding then split a pair of free throws, shooting for Lindsay Adams as she couldn’t attempt the tosses because of the intentional foul.
Dahl said it took some changes to help give Chi-Hi the victory.
“We put some ball pressure on their guards,” he said. “But we still couldn’t get our offense going. We had to go with a deliberate offense.
“We basically were looking for lay-ups because nothing else was falling.”
Chi-Hi had to claw its way back from a tough start. Menomonie went up 7-0 early and it took a free throw to get the Cardinals going.
Sam Buonauro led Chi-Hi (15-5, 7-5 BRC) with 11 points and six rebounds while Elizabeth Leis had 10 rebounds to go with her seven points.
Lily Buckley led Menomonie (3-16, 1-11 BRC) with eight points.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday night in Chippewa Falls in the WIAA playoffs.
